I recently picked up 5 rolls of Merc dimes for $.02 over spot. That was a bit of a fluke though, usually they will be a tad bit more, but still cheaper premium than bars. All depends on where you buy from as well.

Down, AND the lady's birthday is coming up.
Repent, repent, off to the the LCS I went... Gifts are ALWAYS better on MAJOR-sale. I just hope it stays low long enough for me to get some for me too, this weekend... Last edited by the86d; 09-05-2018 at 4:24 AM.. |

Not bad. Mercs are my favorite junk.

I must be getting old: i couldn't find an answer on google. Any specific reason 1986 eagles and libertads cost 50-100% more than current day ish? Is it just because they're 33 years old or is there something more significant?

IIRC, that is the first year of manufacture. Since the populace didn't really know about them, there were very few made.

I buy Silver for SHTF and the cool factor, like 1911's.
It seems to me that they always command a premium, that I won't pay.

My other gripe about buying silver is these "secondary market" bars from apmex. Dunno if I'll get kindof an industrual sorta use bar, a regular rectangle, a stacker, or what. Usually if you order more than 1 they try to make them the same, but other times its just a gamble. Makes me hesitate to buy these bar tubes. Any of you have cheap/good alternatives to coin or bar tubes? I mean other than making my own custom boxes since I don't have access to any machinery. |

My recommendation is to stick to the rounds. For some reason, they are more popular if you decide to sell them. They also take less of a hit if you sell them back and if you order 20 at a time, they come prepackaged in plastic tubes.
If you're intent on the bars, I went to The Container Store and bought a series of those little plastic containers like these: http://illbedead.com/clear-plastic-boxes-with-lids/ I use them mainly for my gold Eagles and Maples, but they have different sizes and types, so I'm sure you can find them for the 10 oz bars. I got them for $0.99 each and they hold 14 eagles each and I just use the thin packing foam to separate them. The thing is...most of the bigger bars come sealed. . Quote:

Right now some people are complaining that PMs are "on sale".
Granted, if I were trying to retire right now, rather than add troy-ounces, I'd probably be upset. It looks like the $14 mark might be about the new bottom-floor, compared to the old floor of about ~$5/ozt 15-20 years ago (for about ~30 years prior), but we shall see! Picked up some more this weekend, in 2 trips, as I happened to be in the area, and the lady did too. Last edited by the86d; 09-10-2018 at 3:57 AM.. |

I guess a strong economy drives down pm prices. So on one Han d my PMs are taking a dump. But the stock portfolio is doing great.
I celebrate diversify.

Proud Mary keep on burnin'?
Bought about 120 ounces of silver at $14.20 a couple days ago, feels nice knowing its up at $14.35 today before it even got to me. Of course, its got to get up above $16 again before I can sell at a profit. |

Interesting development. Provident is now selling 1/2 oz silver coins and is currently out of junk silver.
It may not be new but it's the first time I've ever seen half ounce silver coins.

APMEX has something like 30 1/2 oz rounds and bars. Even 1/4oz and even 1/10 oz rounds. Think its significant?

It is not new. 1/2 ounce and other sizes have been around a long time.

What I thought was interesting about the 1/2 oz coins was that generally you would think 1/2 oz coins would be sold when silver got very expensive, not when it is so low.
Oh well...

Just a heads up for anyone that cares, I bought a square 10oz tube to store the 10oz bars in. My A-mark bars will not fit, the generic 10oz bar won't fit 10 of them inside, and the Silvertowne bars came in their own sealed plastic, so it really wasn't necessary unless I take them out. Its decently thick plastic and a friction fit. Let my $5 accident be your foresight.
Tube I'll also add I bought one of those 20 silver eagle containers for I think $2. It'll definitely hold 20 silver eagles, it isn't really air tight and rather cheap plastic. Silver maples and libertads are a slightly different dimension than eagles (thicker but smaller diameter). Wish I had a pill bottle big enough, but I just don't. I can't say I'd reccomend this tube because its thin walled, and feels cheap. coin tube Last edited by OutlawStar; 09-24-2018 at 9:24 AM.. |

I would agree but it would be of slight "eeh" factor to see it surpass that other post's view count.

Guess who's making a KILLING?
https://www.walmart.com/browse/coin-...hProductResult Look at those prices for BU... Not that I am a big numismatic collector, but at least the 2017 Silver Krugerrands are holding steady-higher than I paid, even when spot dropped a LOT. I figure a few years they can be flipped for a bullion purchase, for a 1st year minting, like Zombucks... 2018 Krugerrands are MUCH more reasonably priced. I believe the owners of overpriced status symbols such as a $300-$1000 iPhone, a >$750 Mac, 10" iPads, or those driving status symbols (including truck/SUV's, that not often full of hardware for work) are the real dumbbells...
Including those who can't WiFi tether for free on AT&T cell service. Last edited by the86d; 10-03-2018 at 3:52 AM.. |
