Question iPad - how to remove previous owners iTunes account

A friend gave me an older iPad. The challenge is that it was tied to her old law firm and she does not have the iTunes account password.

In order for me to remove the “find my iPhone” option so I can reset the device and use my account, I need to old iTunes password that is tied to a dead email account.

Any ideas or is this now an iPad that should be recycled?

Doesn't work, you still need the itunes password for the previous account. It is done to prevent theft and sales of stolen devices, factory reset wont fix the problem. The only thing these are good for, are parts.

OP - your friend should try the alternate options to reset the password. Email reset is not the only option. If she still has the same phone number she used, or remembers the answers to security questions, she can reset the password

Last resort is for her to contact apple support https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204169

I've done that before and it works. Restore to factory settings erases the Ipad like it was brand new.

They need to delete the device from their iCloud.

Yeah. We tried a few things. She will try the iTunes process.
Email account is dead
Now she gets to go to iTunes support and see what they will do....

Put the iPad in DFU mode then connect to a computer with iTunes and set it up as a new device. That has worked for me in the past.

Google will give you a million hits. "iPad DFU" will work.

Look people:

Find my iPhone enables Activation Lock
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201365

Quote:
When you turn on Find My iPhone on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, your Apple ID is securely stored on Apple’s activation servers and linked to your device. From that point on, your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My iPhone, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.
Quote:
If you can't find your Apple ID or reset your password, you'll lose access to your account and might be unable to use or reactivate your device
Quote:
Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else
Before you buy an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch from someone other than Apple or an authorized Apple reseller, make sure that the device is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account. Ask the seller whether or not they've turned off Activation Lock, then follow these steps:
Quote:
Before you give away your device or send it in for service
Make sure that you turn off Find My iPhone on your device before you give it away or send it in for repair. Otherwise, your device is locked and anyone that you give the device to can't use it normally and Apple technicians can't perform service repairs. Just sign out of iCloud and then erase all content and settings. This completely erases your device, removes it from your Apple ID, and turns off Find My iPhone.
if you forget the DEVICE passcode, you can erase it but you still need the APPLE ID password if find my iphone was enabled

if you forgot the ICLOUD / APPLE ID passcode, erasing it will not remove the activation lock

Think about it. There is a reason that hundreds of devices for sale on ebay specifically state they are locked and being sold for parts only, and it isn't because no one ever heard of DFU. This is a SECURITY FEATURE.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPad-...1/192543570080

https://www.ebay.com/itm/iPad-Mini-2...d/312135956044

When you do a DFU restore it will not override activation lock.

There are a lot of scam products that claim to remove activation lock, but mostly just scams. There may be legit 3rd party products that can do it.

People have been trying to get around it for years and for a brief time there may have been a hole

https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemath.../#b1640c6d5471

https://www.lifewire.com/when-activa...iphone-1999377

Apple can remove activation lock remotely, but will only do it if you can convince them you rightfully own the device.

You are SOL. No icloud activated device will activate until it is removed. They closed the loophole years ago and the only way to get apple to unlock it is if you have a receipt or proof of ownership.

The whole point of the iOS device being locked to an Apple ID is so that it can't be used by anyone after it is stolen.

Kinda pointless other than giving you the satisfaction of knowing your stolen device can't be used. It doesn't cost the thief anything to steal an unusable device. If they can't use it they'll just dump it. You're still out of your property.

I reached out to 3 people on craigslist who can “get past the password”

Well they can get past the screen lock password

If “Find my IPad” is active, it’s a parts kit only.

She is going to go to apple support and try to figure out if they can help
