Thinking about turning my dad's Rem 1100 into HD shotgun
My dad passed away many years ago and I inherited his Remington 1100 semiauto 20 gauge shotgun with a 28-inch barrel. I believe we used to shoot doves with this shotgun back when I was a teenager. I no longer hunt, but I do have an interest in home defense. My only other gun is a 9mm pistol.
So, I was thinking about having the barrel cut down to 18 or 20 inches and adding a magazine extension to turn the gun into a home defense gun. On one hand, I'd feel kinda bad about chopping up dad's old hunting shotgun. On the other hand, the gun currently just stays locked in a case and rarely gets any use. It might be cool to have a use for the gun and to practice with it; kind of like my dad's somehow protecting me with his old shotgun. I see that if I keep the barrel at 20 inches I can buy a clamp on magazine extension to hold three extra shells. I'm not sure if I can add a shorter, two shell extension without the clamp. I'm also not sure how much it would cost to have the barrel cut and a new front sight added. I imagine just leaving it without a choke would be okay on a home defense gun? What do y'all think about this idea? |

My $.02............don’t do it. Buy a 12ga 870 or something better suited for HD. They are not that expensive. Keep the 20ga 1100 in it’s current configuration. Find some time to go to the range and shoot some clays, or better yet, take it hunting!

There are 1100's and there are 1100s. Do you know which 1100 it is? Standard frame or scaled frame? LT-20? SP-20? Standard or magnum? Pressed checkering or cut checkering? Vent rib or plain barrel? RemChokes?
Maybe an SA or SB? Or a TA or TB? Lots to consider before you start cutting up a good gun. Quote:

I second XVIga_Rob's suggestion! If you aren't going to use the 1100, many of us would be interested in purchasing it, and you can use the funds to buy a dedicated home defense shotgun.

I personally would leave it alone and enjoy hunting with it and relish the memory. But I'm sentimental like that. I have my Dads old Mossberg slug gun and kept it as is, and I have my Wife's Grandfathers 870 Wingmaster kept as I received it, other than some springs and a goof cleaning.

If you really want to make it into a HD shotgun, buy a barrel (on sale for $170- $180) and have it cut professionally. Not sure about tube extensions for an 1100?

Looks like they exist. Your tube may not have the dimples.

Thank you, NATEWA! If I decide to go forward with this project I'll buy a barrel like that and keep the original barrel. Very good idea |

DONT CUT IT, go shoot some trap with it.
Buy another barrel, or go buy a 12ga for defense. Like said above, the 1100 20ga have two different size receivers. Why do people always want to "improve" their family heirlooms ?

Gas operated semi-autos are tuned for a specific length barrel. When you change the barrel length it is frequently necessary to change gas port diameter, springs, etc to ensure reliable operation. YMMV it can end up being a bigger project than you imagined at the outset and you may never be truly happy with the result.
Personally I would leave the heirloom as-is and buy an affordable dedicated HD shotgun. You may not be a big clay shooter or bird hunter but that could change somewhere down the line. Your son may someday take an interest and it might mean something to him to be able to shoot his grandfather's gun. Once you bubba it, you can never really go back. If you want a recommendation I am very happy with my Mossberg 590. Go take a good HD shotgun class, worth every penny. I like LMS Defense but there are a lot of good training outfits out there.

I'd try to find a dedicated barrel for it. Depending if it's 12g frame or 20g frame could determine the availability of such.

I picked up one of these and I’m impressed with it. It’s an 870 clone that is better than an 870 in some ways.

Lower price, metal trigger (not sure if it’s better than the 870), and finish. I had some hang ups with my 870. I haven’t shot the H&R yet but according to those on the web, it’s a shooter. The top of the receiver is ready for a rail (not sure if the express tactical is?). I’m cheap so the low price was the biggest thing that made it “better.” |
