Remington 700 SPS 308 Zeroing Issues
So I decided to try something new other than building another semi-auto rifle and picked up a Remington 700. I brought it out to the range today and tapped out on the (down) elevation at the 100 yard mark while zeroing. I'm hitting about 4 1/2 inches from dead center of the target. I eventually want to venture out to the 3-500 yard range in the future and I figured this set up would get me there. Any ideas on what I can change (besides the scope) to get the 4 1/2 inches while still being able to use the BDC for the longer "reach out and touch someone" aspect? I'm fairly new with the whole bolt action rifle realm. My goal down the line is to have a fairly decent precision rifle, nothing to crazy of course. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you don't have enough travel in that scope to account for 20 MOA mount. Nikon specs indicate only 40 MOA total adjustment (you'll lose even a bit of that if you have much windage dialed in). Why they'd supply a 20 MOA mount with only +/- 20 MOA adjsutment beats me. You'd have to zero at something beyong 100 yards.
Typically scopes intended for extended ranges come with 30mm tubes in order to get more travel. You could change mounting. FWIW, burris Signature rings will allow lesser amounts of MOA offset.

I would try to get that scope as low as possible. I believe that ring/mount is meant for a AR platform. EGW makes some great basic rings. I have the EGW 20 moa base on my tikka with the EGW rings they are very nice.

Anything which fits Weaver style bases or Picatinny bases will fit the Picatinny base. For Burris Signature, it's the Zee rings. There's many choices if you don't require MOA offset. Lose the supplied factory 1-piece 20 MOA mount. I don't think that scope is going to work well with 20 MOA mount with only +/- 20 MOA adjustment. WTF was Nikon thinking?

I ask myself that question almost every time I see a new Nikon scope.
In general not a big fan of their design and feature sets.

The M-308 scope and mount are purpose built to go on a flat top AR type rifle.
That's why the mount is elevated and forward set. Same thing with the M-223 series of scopes. ETA: I think the OP has achieved chinweld..

I was speaking to 20 MOA offset mount on a scope with only +/- 20 MOA adjustment.

Ouch, that scope is sitting way too high. As a general rule you want the objective lens (with scope cover) as close as possible to the barrel as long as you can get a good cheek weld; you appear to have around an 1 1/4" of clearance. Combined with your 20moa ring-mount setup I'm not surprised you can't zero at 100 yards.
Unless you're shooting past 500 meters you don't need the extra 20 moa although some people prefer it; not everyone has a need or place to shoot 800-1000 yards though.

The scope will adjust with the 20 MOA base, but needs to get the scope lower to the bore. Low to medium rings will take care of that.

It should be lower to the bore, but dropping it an inch isn't gonna buy him 4+ inches at 100 yd. He'd need about 250 yard zero.

42mm objective low rings should be fine. 50mm is when I switch to medium rings.

I have a pair of Burris XTR low (mounted once, but never shot - a little too low for my setup) in original packaging... will sell for $40
Also have Burris XTR QD med that have been used (minor wear - very good condition) also $40 *edit... I just realized you are using Nikon (I think all their M series are 1"?...) these are 30mm rings - I wouldn't suggest inserts, but some people use 'em (in case you're interested). Did you get Signature Zee or regular Zee? The Sig is the one with the inserts which both protect the scope from ring marks and allow some limited tuning.

Looking good, much better with the low rings. I'm still sorta a noob with my 700 but once you get some trigger time and start getting the hang of breathing and trigger control I'm sure you'll start seeing better groups.
What kind of ammo were you shooting? Feeding them decent stuff definitely makes a difference . My 700 shoots 5in groups with M80 Mil-surp (granted that was my first 2 times shooting it, haven't tested it again recently), and <1" with handloads.

One of the first things to do while setting up to place an optic on top of your rifle, is to bed your scope base. You may be gaining or losing moa, both is bad for your scope. Search YouTube for the proper way to check and bed your base.
Defiantly mount your scope as low as possible to get proper cheek weld.
