Default Planning a new upper build, 6.5 Grendel. Looking for value parts.

So by the end of the year I'd like to have assembled a 6.5 grendel upper.
General knock around gun. Hunting, paper killing, blaster. A well rounded rifle.

At most this will probably wear a 3 or 4 power scope.

I'm having a bit of trouble choosing a barrel. Lots of options but lots of unknowns.

First off, 16 or 18 inch? The extra two inches probably wouldn't bother me that much but if 16 will still perform at range then I'd prefer it. If 18 inch then rifle or mid length?
Also I'd like to avoid the freaking Hbar, but it seems really prevalent in this caliber. Is it needed or just popular among target shooters?
Finally (for now) any recommendations on a good value barrel? I'm not going to shell out for BCM or DD barrels, but I don't want garbage either. I'm willing to pay for a good barrel, but not the best barrel.

So gentlemen any suggestions? Right now I'm looking hard at AR performance.

For barrels check out www.maximfirearms.com or Brownells for excellent barrels at a good price.

See if there are any barrel group buys going on at 65grendel.com.

You can probably find lots of barrel reviews there too.

Get a good barrel. Its like buying a house with a F'd up foundation. You want the foundation to be good.

True. But nothing beats bragging about your $20,000 house!

It was a joke. Reflecting how many here would rather a bargain to brag about than a quality rifle.

I think Anderson makes a 16" Grendel barrel that they sell for $99. Due to the aggressive pricing, it's almost always out of stock though.

Check here.

Edit: Found it in stock for $94 here.

Default Spinta Precision.

Folks,

Spinta Precision, hellishly accurate. They have a 20 inch Grendel barrel for $169. Type I, 7.62x39 bolt. You will never regret it. A2

You want to build a cheap rifle thats chambered in a semi expensive still-sorta-wildcat cartridge? Thats like buying a 97 civic just to drive to buttonwillow raceway every day to fill up with 110 Octane on R888 tires

Who said anything about cheap?
Value means just that-good for the money. If that means $400 for a barrel there it is, but I'm not going to shell that out for parts that are "the best" because they have a tactical name.
And I don't make my living shooting so I don't need the best of the best custom barrel. I'll be shooting a lot of Moscow match out of it so a 1/4 MOA barrel will be frankly wasted on me.
Seems reasonable to me, what's got you all riled up bud?

I've heard good things about them, but they are all OOS.

I was looking at this from ballistic advantage. I've read good things but no first hand experience with them.

http://ballisticadvantage.com/18-inc...um-barrel.html

That and the AR performance barrel. Their 7.62x39 barrel shot really well, but again I'm very inexperienced with anything past 300 meters.

I have a $500 dollar Grendel barrel that can't shoot better than 4 MOA. I have a friend with a $99 Grendel barrel that's 1/2 MOA.

Have you ever considered it might be you? Or the ammo? Regardless, bad batches and barrels happen. So does luck.

Well, we both shoot 1/2 MOA with his, and we both shoot 4 MOA with mine. I've tried everything I can load wise. The best it's ever done was 2.5 MOA.

+1 on spinta, I really love mine, great barrel all the way around. I also made sure to wait for the elander magazines they make all the difference. I would probably go a little higher on the scope magnification Grendel can get out pretty far.

On a side-note can anyone say good or bad on that wolf steel cased polymer ammo? It comes out to about the same as 5.56 ammo cost. I'm just curious if anyone knows if it's any good or if it's complete garbage.
