Default What French Foreign Legion rifle is this? (news pic)

A Romanian national from the 1st section 'Les Aigles ' (the eagles) of the 2nd REG (Régiment étranger du génie), serving as a soldier with the French Foreign Legion, at Forward Operating Base Tagab-Kutschbach near Tagab in Kapisa Province on January 24, 2011. The French Foreign Legion, a military unit established in 1831, was created for foreign nationals of any nationality wishing to serve in the French armed forces.

Unlike the rest of the French military, the French Foreign Legion actually fights. It's because it's full of non-French soldiers.

You don't know history my friend. The French soldier and Marine has fought and died bravely in very large numbers for many years. The French army held the permimeter at Dunkirk and allowed the British army and elements of the French army to evacuate while they stayed and died. The French Army, Marines and Air Force fought and died bravely throughout Indo China. The main problem the French have faced throughout the years is unimaginative leadership at the top.

A combo of two pictures taken on January 27, 2011 shows Mongolia's soldier from the 1st section 'Les Aigles ' (the eagles) of the 2nd REG (engineering foreign regiment) serving as a soldier with the French Foreign Legion, at Forward Operating Base Tagab-Kutschbach, near Tagab in Kapisa Province, and a notebook with a sentence written by the soldier reading 'the mission is our business'.

Couple more points - every French service member, Algerian, Moroccan and Vietnamese fighting on behalf of France in Indo-China was a volunteer. By French law no draftees were allowed to serve outside of Europe. Volunteers were still parachuting into Dien Bien Phu almost to the last day that the installation was overrun by the Viet Minh. Many of the specialist volunteers were not airborne qualified. They strapped on a 'chute and jumped into hell's cauldron. That takes bravery.

That's the whole point of the foreign legion. They get people from other countries to fight for them.

I took to personal tour of the FFL's headquarters in Aubagne,France in 2008. Lots of history there, but I was not allowed to take pictures inside the museum. Stood under the display of Captain Danjou's wooden hand form the battle of Puebla,Mexico 1863. If in France one must make this a stop. Well worth the trip to Aubagne. Its on the way to Nice.

as far as the FFL, I have a lot of respect for them because most join purely to be soldiers. No patriotism, job training, or GI Bill is their motivation.

I thought most join for the citizenship status. Cons and the likes are even welcom. You'll even be provided with a new name and a clean slate. At least that's what I've heard.

A good many join because they have limited opportunities in their home land.
The FFL asks no questions. All they care about is that you're a fighter.

I researched the weapon a little bit. At fist it was craptastic but then the French pulled their head out of thier fourth point of contact. It was originally designed for 5.56x45 French instead of 5.56x45 NATO. It had jamming issues if loaded with NATO ammo. They eventually changed it for common sense purposes. My buddy got chosen to shoot with the French during mob in Germany and he said it was a pretty awesome weapon. VERY controllable in FA. Wish I got to shoot with them

A new name and new French citizenship upon completion of your contract. They don't care who you are, only if you have the will to keep going and never quit. You make it in the FFL your pretty much a certified badarse and will be respected in any military circle.
I actually know a guy who holds a french passport and he ain't french.

It's actually a genius foreign policy move. The French don't have to worry about all the bad press of expeditionary forces going overseas because they just send the legion which is primarily made up of foreign nationals. Last I read the officer corps of the legion are still french.
