New 20 round M1a mags
I got 5 of these (among others) during the Magapalooza week and haven’t used them at all yet. Going to head to the range tomorrow and thinking of taking my M1. Haven’t shot it with a 20 rounder before - is there anything I need to watch out for in terms of feeding etc?

There is some suggestion that resting the rifle on the magazine while shooting can lead to bad results.

I can't comment on how it would fare on the M1A, but I run these on a converted .308 VEPR. I have a few no name brand ones, a couple Springfield Armory ones and a couple CheckMate Industries. The no-name ones tend to jam as the follower tilts forward after shooting one or two rounds. Very frustrating. By loading the rounds as far back as possible, the follower tilt is lessened a bit. The SA and CMI ones tend to be more reliable. I have since bought stronger Wolff springs for these, but I haven't had chance to try them out again. If the rounds nosedive again, I'll have to toss the no name ones and just stick with SA or CMI. It might be time for me to try some CSSspecs M14 30 rounders eventually.

I have an M1A and have had a decent amount of range time with it. All of my magazines are Checkmates and they all work perfectly. Before 44mag.com closed down they were blowing them out cheap. I have used the cheapo KCI magazines for other platforms and they run great too, but I haven't used those with an M1A.
One thing that was a hangup for me at first was the realization that "OMG They don't have anti-tilt followers!!" But they worked fine. Here is an article with interesting reading for M1A owners. I don't agree with it at all, but YMMV. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/bu...-history-62692 |

I guess I would add that if it is a serious evaluation of the magazines, I'd eliminate as many other factors as possible. I don't know if an M1A will shoot combloc ammo reliably, but I wouldn't use it. Good .308 ammo is still surprisingly affordable at .50 cents per round or so. With that and the weapon properly maintained, I'd bet there will be zero issues/

excercise your trigger finger prior to shooting or it will get fatigued from firing so many rounds between mag changes.

If you got cheap/knock-off M14 magazines, then be prepared to clear stoppages/malfunctions.

Make sure to rap the back of the loaded magazine against your helmet before seating the magazine in the rifle to insure all the rounds are fully seated....err, never mind, wrong century.
Checkmate makes M14 magazines for our armed forces so if that's what you have you'll have no problems. |

Bumping 20s is hard, so bring a 10 to keep up your bumpy practice
ProTip: Key your thumb out of the way!
