I think you misunderstood the message of the twinkie... the post is about what will you be "searching" for

I understand the question, it is a matter of what is important. Nothing listed above even comes close to family. I find most of them shallow and selfish and without merit.

Most people here would benefit from spending time in a third world to find out what really is important to them. I think it would benefit them much better than a comedy zombie movie. Perhaps not.

^ The OP question was asking about what you would miss from the present era, not what was important that you saved.

The thing about twinkies, let's face it, is they are really not that good. Any future society will have the ability to bake cake-like confections, no matter how primitive.

I think I would miss Sweet-n-low, but I refuse to stock up on it. I would also probably miss alcohol, but my plan is to trade a few bullets for any luxury goods like that other preppers may have stocked. I figure if they are trading for ammo, they almost surely need the bullets more than I need the booze.

How could I forget - coffee!!!

I saw on a VH1 Palladia show about Lemmy that crystal meth could be made into a beverage that wasn't near as bad for you as smoking it. Maybe this could be a substitute for caffeine. I would still miss coffee though.

Obviously nothing comes close to family. The whole reason I prep is to not just increase my chances of survival, but of that of my family as well.

You did answer the original question and extended it to include what truly makes you happy. Can an inanimate object truly bring you happiness?

You are right. It was meant to be some kind of luxury item. Like Twinkies, coffee, alcohol, Dr. Pepper. Something you could stock pile. Stock piling family... would be kinda creepy.

In KevinB's original post he also mentioned, his dogs and a great book to better comply with the spirit of the question. He decided to extend his answer beyond the purpose of my original question.

Quote:
Second part of the question, do you have a stash or stock pile of this in your home?
Is it weird to quote myself? Part of the reason for the post. Was to see if anyone was stock piling items that gave them happiness and not just increased survival. Most people ignored the second part of the question... still interesting to see peoples choices regardless. Might give us an idea of what would be good for trade or barter.

After all of the posts I have read on SHTF. I have rarely seen someone mention including things in their preps that make them happy. Morale can have a big effect on your survival.

My wife objects to most of my "practical" preps. Frivolous ones are out of the question.

My fiance is ok with my frivolous preps (specifically Dr. Pepper) and made some demands of her own.

I noticed some changes when my girlfriend evolved into a fiance. Can I expect worse when she evolves into a wife?

Probably insulin..

As a type 1 diabetic I'm probably doomed if anything crazy long term did happen. It will be real life walking dead looking for medical supplies. Right now all I'm aloud to get is a few month supply at a time. If I use it quicker (every meal, every day I take different amounts) or even break a vial of it (Ive dropped plenty) they get weird on re-filling as if I'm taking it like a drug....no clue how I could abuse it, if I did ide get low blood sugar and go into a coma..

I have been to a few Grateful Dead shows and gatherings. At one gathering deep in the woods of Missouri, a lady at a campfire yelled

"Fabric Softener! I haven't smelled that in years" as my friend came to the pit and sat down.

Not saying mine is fabric softener, but who knows? Memories of better/different times.... Maybe I'll throw in a piece of cloth with my girlfriends perfume sealed up in my BOB.
