Default Got My BOV Today

I looked for 75 days before finding, close to home, a 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser. Engine has been recently rebuilt. Runs great. Passed CAs smog easily. Cosmetically not all that but I can care less about looks. In fact the poorer the better quite possibly.

Now I have to figure out what parts I should stock up on.

What tires are those?

"LT" or "P" rated?

"C", "D" or "E" load-range?

Sidewall construction is triple ply...double....single?

DON'T buy on price alone if you truly intend to depend on them in a bug-out situation.

I had an 83 FJ60 and it was built like a tank. I swapped in a Chevy 350 and ran a Holley Projection system. Added a full cage inside and custom bumpers.

Congrats!!

I have a '72 FJ40 and a '91 FJ80

Unless you do a ton of odd modifications, routine maintenance items are all you are going to need.

If you don't already have a roof rack, get one!! Best addition ever

* a winch and a High-lift jack are a couple of "must have" items in my opinion

As far as a High-Lift jack goes, don't make the mistake of buying the shorter one because it is easier to store. The lifting range on those jacks is one foot less then their length, so a 48" jack will only safely lift the load to 36 inches and the 36" to 24 inches.

That might seem like plenty but keep in mind how tall your bumper is already. Bigger tires and lift kits all raise the starting point and reduce the overall lift height. It always amuses me to see the guys with the lifted jeeps on 37" tires who have a 48" or even a 36" jack mounted to their vehicles rack. Those jacks are almost maxed out simply getting to the bottom of their bumper.

Lift range is an issue when your tire is dropped into a deep hole or has dug it's way down into the sand/mud and you are trying to lift it up high enough to fill in underneath.

Now it is possible to assist the jack's lifting by strapping the axle to the frame before raising the vehicle but that can be a real pain depending on the situation.

I own and always recommend the 60" jack for just this reason.

I miss my FJ55. Would have been a great BOV. Hindsight.
