Default Officer hits nine people with one shot!

I am the only one in this restaurant professional enough that I can carry this *BANG*!

http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-pol...-shooters-cafe

An off duty corrections officer in Florida is the latest person to have a gun accidentally go off and injure people. According to the Florida-based Sun Sentinel, a gun went off inside a cafe, injuring nine people.

The bullet hit the metal base of a table, and then ricocheted off into customers. The Miami-Dade Corrections officer, named Marcus Leon Thompson, told law enforcement that his gun went off when he reached for money and a valet ticket into his pocket, which also contained his gun.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that “the police reports list nine people who either felt a burning sensation or received small cuts from bullet fragments after Thompson's gun went off, including two staffers. A 79-year-old woman visiting from New Jersey was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with a small fragment in her buttocks.”

After the incident, Thompson handed his server money for the bill and went outside with his wife. His server, after he figured out what happened in the cafe, told Thompson to wait for the police.

The name of the bar where the indicent happened is "Shooters Waterfront" and the irony isn't lost on the owner, who bought the business last week. But she says "this was an accident that could have happened anywhere."

Thought so - Marcus Leon Thompson "reached into his right pocked where is unholstered firearm was located, to retrieve money and a valet ticket, when he accidentally discharged his firearm as he reached in." http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/cl...cident_inv.php

By the way, article says it was a Glock 19.

This is why I hate Glock-style handguns that lack an external safety. I'd be paranoid all the time something like this would happen.

That's why we keep Glocks in holsters (preferably the locking kind) when we store them in places like pockets and backpacks.

Question though... How big were his pockets to be able to hold an entire Glock 19?

Last thing. Guns don't ever accidentally go off. Sometimes dumb asses accidentally pull the trigger on guns, bit they never do it on their own.

I've been carrying a glock for 6 years. It has never "accidently" gone off. Carry in a holster end of story.

Well if you are paranoid something like this would happen then you and obviously him are lacking in gun handling knowledge.

I carry 2 different Glocks, a Kahr with no external safety, my revolver has no external safety and yet I havent shot up a restaurant yet.

Its called common sense, practice and being aware of your condition.

I can guarantee that I am not alone in pratctice, that when there is a gun in a pocket holster in my pocket, I dont put anything else in that pocket...

My .38 and nemesis is all that is in my pocket.

Please stop giving the politicians more reason to ban unsafe guns...

I guess he forgot all about the "Guns are always loaded" rule. A simple MIC holster would have allowed him to safely pocket or Mexican carry.

That doesn't solve it. My 1911 safety will disengage all the time were it not for the holster that locks it in the up position while holstered.

Yeah, if I were to pocket a gun it would have a thin sheath to cover the trigger. If it were a J frame, no exposed hammer.

Rule #1 of pocket carry.

You have a gun pocket, it is not a gun and some change or keys pocket. It is not a gun and some loose ammo/magazine/speed loader/speed strip pocket.

When you are pocket carrying, the pocket is part of the holster, and you wouldn't put your valet ticket in your holster.

So let me get this straight. He had his hand in his pocket fondling his piece and it when off? That must have been some kind of load if it hit 9 people. Remind me not to sit in that booth or anywhere near him.

You should never carry any firearm without some mechanism designed to guard the trigger (holster, vanguard, etc.). Relying on an external safety to safeguard against a ND on a pistol being carried without a holster is NOT safe. Same goes for a Glock or any other type pistol. Glocks and similar pistols are safe to carry when they are holstered as designed. Don't blame the gun, but the user.

The safety is in the software NOT the hardware.

The root cause of this incident is the idiot that negligently discharged his firearm while reaching for his money. Not the firearm.

"have a gun accidentally go off..."

They don't accidentally go off. Someone has to do something specific for this to happen.

Funny how when a LEO does it it's reported as "the gun accidentally went off".

No...it's called an ND! The gun went off because you pulled the trigger jacka*s!

Exactly.

At least no one died, but just idiotic. Anyone remember that terrible story of the father with his four kids in Utah, shot himself while undoing the seatbelt, bullet hits his Femoral artery, bleeds out and dies in 15 minutes. As I recall, it was an upholstered Glock that he kept in his pant line..... sad, but for &#@% sakes, he should have known better. And on TTAG, they had the outcome of this negligent cop/father who left his service firearm in a cup holder with his two kids in the car, one child accidentally kills the other... terribly sad, but it all amounts to negligence, all easily avoidable scenarios.

The cup holder guy got his job as a cop back too.

Unfortunately I suspect the Glock safe design gives many Glock owners a false sense of security that can lead to a relaxing of safety discipline.

I imagine they must have counted minor hearing damage as an injury or something.

9 people. Sounds like some are looking for a payout.
Reminds me of the transit bus that got in an accident in Oakland. There were about 30 people on the bus at the time but about 100 people filed claims stating that they were on the bus and suffered injuries.
