Default Background Check Curiosity

Curious, turned in paperwork in Nv. Information is so fast that before we were even done with pictures and prints, they already had a full background. Even made a comment about an incident 40 yes ago. No big deal, but documented.

Leads to two questions. First with so much info so fast, why or what about FBI check takes weeks to
months?

Second. If applying to additional states, why is that follow up not instant?

It is my understanding that response time to dros via ncis is measured in seconds.

The delay has absolutley nothing to do with the background check. It has everything to do with yet another barrier to law abiding citizens being able to protect themselves.

The background checks are complete before you leave the counter of a gun store the majority of the time.

10 day waiting period is due to a California law and nothing more. In most states you can walk in/out with a gun. California is the exception.

I understand that part. My curiosity is as it pertains to CCW and the FBI check. Must seems to be long and drawn out. And again, curious what is available via final FBI check as opposed to what they can pull up imediatly.

Warrants and wants come up dam near real time. Felony convictions come up quickly.

Issues around speed arise when the name is common. John Smith will take longer then Akio Eksosnrodk.

I hope that helps.

I assume the FBI also has a bit of a "cooling off" period, to make sure no new issues crop up in the system. Imagine if you were running to apply for a LTC at the same time your wife was pressing charges at the police station for a domestic assault. Let the computer systems get synced up and make sure there's nothing floating around to disqualify you.

It has more to do with the Department you apply at waiting for a "HARD COPY" of the doc's before moving forward with your app.

My name is decidedly uncommon and my record is squeaky clean.. In 2011, my FBI cleared in a day. DOJ took about 6 weeks to electronically clear, and a few more weeks to send the letter to SSD.

My FBI cleared within minutes. Why forever from DOJ?

I don't have enough trustworthy info to be able to proclaim that "they" don't want to. I do know that state agencies in general have experienced budget cutbacks over the last several years, and I doubt DOJ is an exception. To what degree these cutbacks have impacted staffing in specific divisions within DOJ is unknown to me. However, one reasonable hypothesis is that the workload has increased for some employees and that the priority assigned to LTC background checks is low compared to some other reasons. If the prioritization is an issue, there are several possible explanations, and not all of 'em include a deliberate attempt to slow down LTC issuance. Anecdotally, I was told by the very helpful person at DOJ with whom I communicated periodically during the process that my delay was mostly due to the existence of old inked prints of mine that had been in the system since the mid-80's (an employment thing), and the fact that I had not previously been live scanned. My inked prints had to be compared with my then current live scan prints. Those are all the data I have, and they are not sufficient to conclude that DOJ is deliberately slowing down LTC background checks.

Who put those time consuming requirements in place? They did. Because they can.

To complete a NICS check in literally seconds, where no fingerprints are required BTW, and approve one to buy or possess a firearm, but then say further investigation is required if they want to actually carry it makes no sense at all to me.

Agrees to meet seller with cash for nib CZ75.

Meets seller at mall parking lot.

Checks weapon, pays money.
