Default New to Sacramento

Well folks, here is my introduction here, and I'm certainly searching for knowledge as well.

I have held CCW licenses in MO and currently hold one in CO.

As far as I can tell, based on my research thus far, it would seem that while Sacramento County was once effectively a "no issue" county, that in recent history this has changed.

While it seems Sutter County is one's best best, I just don't think that's going to work, as I need to be close to the SMF airport, and going north from there seems like all ag land, until you get up to the next town. So, I think I'm stuck in Sacramento County, and it seems Yolo County is a lost cause.

I am moving to the area Mar 1-ish, so can I apply as soon as I move, or do I have to wait a certain period?

As far as CA being a "may issue" state, with respect to Sacramento County, how does this work in practice?

This looks like a great forum, and I'm looking forward to spending time here.

Welcome. Governor Brown needs your tax dollars as he already spent ours. Seriously can't help you in Sac but up here in Placerville, we are 40 minutes from downtown Sac and have a very gun friendly Sherriff up here in El Dorado County. Plus this is the gateway to Lake Tahoe and the whole western slope of the Sierra Nevada range. A virtual playground albeit without any snow to speak of this year.

Sac county is now "shall issue". Shouldn't have a problem.

I'd LOVE to live up that way, and will be spending plenty of my days off in Tahoe, but sadly, I need to be close to SMF for work

As he said... pretty easy as long as your not nuts. You show up mature, presentable, and with money... the will gladly "relieve" you of it. As for courses, I HIGHLY recommend Wes Lagomarsino. He operates LFI and he is BY FAR the best instructor in Northern California. Helps that you already had a license in order states... should make things a little more easy. Good luck. As far as ranges... outdoor is Sac Valley Shooting range is nice... a bit far out, but good prices and friendly atmosphere. And indoor would be The Gun Room in Elk Grove.

A sincere thank you for the above information. I'll be in touch with them once I get out that way and settled.

Sacramento County is shall issue, unless..... Here's the link for the Sheriff's Dept. It has all the info there. There are some good trainers/classes and ranges (indoor & outdoor) in the area. Good luck with the housing search.

You will need a California Driver's License/ID card number to access the online appointment center. Getting the 1st appointment is the toughest part. TIP: If it says that there are no appoinments available at this time. Don't wait for them to contact you. Keep checking regularly. Cancelations happen.

Welcome Cloudsurfer

There are some nice places around the Sac Airport; Natomas, Elverta and Rio Linda. Natomas is a more modern suburb type area, while Elverta / Rio Linda is more of a comfortable rural setting, only downside to these areas is the mosquitoes from the Rice fields (late summer and fall migrations mainly).

As others have said, no problem getting your CCW in Sac. Just a matter of delays getting your appointments. Apply as soon as you get your driver's license with your new address.

Noted guys!

Just as an aside, once I get my CCW in Sacramento County, what happens if you move somewhere that's not CCW friendly (like San Fran)?

It's all covered on the sac sheriff website I posted. Basically, you notify the sheriff that you moved, along with your new address. Your CCW is then void. You would need to apply for a CCW with the sheriff of the new county of residence.

You're screwed .. you're Sac CCW becomes void and you have to start the process all over at your new location. I think you have 30 days, but it might be 10.

you are required to notify the sheriff within 10 days of any change of residency, according to the sac sheriff website.

Suppose all of this may be moot soon if the state is forced to become "shall issue." We shall see......

Welcome. Try to live downtown its actually pretty nice... stay out of the burbs unless you like boring houses and force yourself to drive everywhere.

Leased a house that I'll be moving into in 2 weeks in the River Oaks neighborhood. 5 min from downtown, so I can live with that (hopefully!)

Hey, when you have the down time, you really need to look up all the laws we have in this state. This isnt MO anymore, many/ most legal things you were used to is now likely not legal, i see your posts regarding your glock and ar, ensure you are familiar with all the new fangled laws.
way too many to post in one spot,

No, I'm fully aware, and realize that I need to start doing some homework. I'm in South America for a few days, but hopefully next week should have some time to begin looking into all this.
