Default Colt not a .45 -- What would you do?

I bought a Gen 1 Colt SAA from River City Gun Exchange in South Sac. The tag on the gun and paperwork said 45 Colt which is what I wanted. I picked up the gun and then sourced a barrel as the barrel that came with the gun was not a Colt barrel. Took it to reputable gunsmith who installed the barrel. But... Gunsmith then noticed the cylinder was not a .45 and he was right-- .45 Colt rounds are too big and do not go in cylinder at all. It is some other caliber, possibly .44 special.

I feel ripped off. To get a gen 1 cylinder, which is hard to get, will cost me anywhere between $400 and $700.

Nobody puts a round in the cylinder when they are looking at a gun at a LGS to make sure it is as advertised--we take the LGS's word for it, right? In this case original (Christy) barrel had no markings.

What would you do? The paperwork says NO REFUNDS but I they sold me a gun not as advertised.

take it back...show them the mistake and how you found it..See what they say. Give them the chance to make it right, If they choose to make it right WIN. If not resell it and the barrel and find what you want. You would win in court i am pretty sure but not worth the drama someone will want it.

find out what caliber it is and put old barrel back on and shoot it or sell it off.

No refunds... but turnabout is fair play. No ripoffs.

I'd take it to them nice and see what you learn. If they get crappy about it, post their names/store name here on CALGUNS. 100k members who know you got ripped off should concern them.

And small claims court could be an option. I'd be mad as heck.

If you paid via credit card or debit you can dispute the charge. You can simply say I went to buy Colt 45... did the paperwork as a 45. When I picked it up I still assumed it was a 45. Went to load a 45 round into it...and discovered it wasn't a 45. I received goods not as advertised. Companies like American Express are very good at disputes between merchants. Thats another route if they dont want to work with you. Just move quickly. The more you wait around, the worst it looks.

Thanks all for the feedback. I really appreciate it. Called River City today and spoke to Ben, the Manager. He was friendly and listened but said I would need to call back and talk to Don--who is gone for two weeks. So, I guess I am waiting two weeks. I am sure this was an honest mistake on their end but they will need to make it right. I think the cost for a Gen 1 Colt .45 cylinder plus costs for gun smithing charges for fitting and matching the wear of the gun is a reasonable remedy. What do you think?

River City Gun Exchange will most likely make it right.

Call and ask for Brandon. He's the owner and seems like a decent guy. That's BS and you deserve some sort of compensation. Funny thing is I was looking for a SAA in .44 here a while back and couldn't find one.

Did they DROS it as a 45 Colt?

I'm betting that it's 44-40.

They did DROS it as a .45 Colt. I tried a 44-40. Check out the pics... the round on the left is a 44-40 and it does not go all the way in. The round on the right is a 45 Colt and it does not go in at all.

44 special maybe? try a 44 mag if you have no special it should slide in but not all the way. The 44-40 is a neck downed round I think

Donnie is a good guy. I'm confident that he'll make it right.

It's a single action, the roster doesn't apply.

It could have been remanufactured into a .38 special at some point.

OP Brandon is the owner. Quit screwing with employees and ask for Brandon until he answers. Seems like a good guy, but let us know if he does the right thing.

Syds Grandpa, Brandon owns Wild Bills, not River City. The owner of River City is Donnie and he is away. When posting information for people you really should get things straight.

Went and met with Don today. He gave me a full refund. He really treated me well during the visit and took a lot if time in showing me other guns as well. He made it right. River City Gun Exchange treats their customers like customers should be treated. Thanks to everyone in this forum for the help.
