Default Newbie to scopes

Have an M4. Would like good optics from 100-not sure yards.
Is there a good website which reviews what to look for and
the "whys and hows" of scopes for a beginner?
Should add that my front site is not the low profile gas block but
the "regular". Does that make a difference?
Also same question for mounts.
Thanks for any info.

With optics you get what you pay for. Most quality scopes won't recognize your front ramp sight. In this I mean you will see right thru it. How much are you wanting to spend? Leupold makes some excellent optics for AR platforms. Trijicon and Aimpoint also. Are you planning on hunting, target, plinking or home defense?

Target/hunting..mainly target. I hadn't ironed out an exact budget...under
$500?. Something that an idiot can figure out.

I hate to re-direct you but SnipersHide is mostly about scopes.

Gonna need way more information than what you supplied to help. For now, I would say, You Tube can get you started. To begin with, what is your accuracy expectation for this weapons system? Sub MOA? 2 MOA? minute of bad guy? spray and pray? Nothing simpler than a red dot. Nevertheless, whatever you get, your gonna have to do yourself a favor and determine what your drop table will look like with your given round at specific ranges. There is no way around this if you want to make first round hits at various distances.
Your front sight will obscure some sight picture at low magnification, however, that shouldn't hinder you much at all.

May I suggest you list where you live... If your near me, I'd be happy to meet at a range and you can sample some different weapons/scopes. In one hour, I can give you a huge head start.

Default I've got alot to learn...

Thanks for the replies. The sniperhide website and links is very helpful.
Might be a few months before I make a decision but I think it will be a
better one.

From my personal experience the Burris 1-4x MTAC is a good scope for the money. It's fast at 1x so you can use it as a red dot. It also has drops marked up to 600 yards if I remember correctly. The glass is clear and you get a huge eyebox to work with.

Don't forget you won't be one hole groupings no matter what scope you use with bulk factory ammo.

When you do get your scope, make sure you evaluate it's performance based on the quality of your ammo.
