Default no but r u local

I have been there a handful of times . it is way in the back and if you go during the week you r almost sure to have it to yourself . I remember at the first option to turn left or STRAIGHT to the ohv area , Yoiu go straight and follow the signs from there . It is about a fifteen minute ride on dirt road . good luck

I believe this is it....
39 7'58.08"N
123 6'5.22"W

From google earth.
I have not actually been there yet. Last time I tried to find it from the clear lake side but left too late in the afternoon and ended up turning around about 6 miles short so we would still have some light to shoot at the little range in south cow mountain.

There are signs. The left turn off Mill Creek road going east is very sharp, and is after the ponds and before the houses.

It's easy to find. Sharp left from the paved road, go straight and up, bear right at the fork. (You can follow the signs) Go up and up and up for a while, then there is a split and you go to the left (the sign says shooting range left maybe .2 miles, to the right is 8mi to the end of the road) and you're there in 2 more minutes. Place is busy on weekends. I've made it up there in all kinds of vehicles, even 4-banger automatic compact car.

Does anyone know how many yards the rifle range is? I was told by someone at the Circle S Ranch in Petaluma that there are a couple of places it goes up to 1000 yards or so, then I read elsewhere on the internet that it's a measly 400 yards (I'm shooting .338 Lapua so 400 yards is barely stretching the legs of my rifle).

Is there anyone that's actually been there with a rifle and knows the approximate distance of the longest stretch for a rifle?

Also, being BLM land, how are the Rangers up there? Are they fairly relaxed if you're not being a toolbag or are they more anxious pain in the butts that roust anyone with a firearm?

Cow Mountain is now shoot only in the range? Soooo Sad...Just another case of Aholes and idiots blowing it for everyone else. This used to be a nice place to shoot anywhere that was safe to discharge.

#23 Making unreasonable noise.
Sounds like a trap and a reason to cite anyone....Is shooting a 7.62 with a 75 rnd drum making unreasonable noise? What if I yell YeeHaa or spit too loudly?

I've been there a few times and love the place. Well, considering it's the only open range area close to me.

I've met some pretty cool and friendly people shooting there.

Have fun and be cool!

I am wondering if there was ever an update on this? I wouldn't mind spending a bit of time helping with the clean up and I don't live too far from there. Does anyone know if Cow Mountain is range only shooting now?

If you are at 400 you are up a steep hill in sagebrush. Put your deer mask on and you won't get shot. And, 400 is about it.

CM is a great place, messy, but that is what city folks do when no one is around. I have taken dozens of noobs there, many from anti COUNTRIES, and they are amazed.

They will clean it up with convicts. Don't tell anyone.

They will never close it down, because the rest of the mountain would get trashed..........don't tell anyone.

Good Mexican food next to the post office in Talmage.

If your heading north from san francisco on the 101 take the Talmadge exit and make a right turn onto Talmadge road.
You drive to the little town of Talmadge about 2.5 miles and the road tees into old river road at The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas
You make another right turn onto old river road and go about 0.75 miles to Mill Creek Rd were you turn left.
This will take you through Mill Creek Park and into The Cow Mountain recreation area.
At Mill Creek Pond you go 0.5 miles and make a hard left to northern Cow Mountain which is off limits to off road vehicle traffic.
The range is a 15 minute to half hour up the hill.
If you met someone at Circle S telling you about 550 yard and 1000 yard shooting that was probably myself.
The public range is 400 yards.
We drive up the hill past the radar towers to almost the water tank and have 550 1000 and 2300 yard targets set-up and steel gongs as well.

Default cow mountain 10/13/2013

hello everyone, my name is jack and im new here. I have been reading calguns.net posts a lot about where to shoot and I get a lot of good info here so I decided to join. I was up at cow mountain this last weekend and thought I would continue the updates. the fist area on the left going up is not bad, empty truck bed liner there but cleanable in a day with 2-3 people. the area on top of the ridge is worse. the spots on the actual road isn't too bad, but if you walk up the hill past the concrete barriers to keep you from driving there, its pretty bad, id say 10 people over a weekend maybe. the actual rifle range is horrible. brought a tear to me eye to see such a nice place treated that way. I'm not sure if 30 people over 2 weeks would even dent it, but smartest route to tackle that is a couple of bobcats pulling rakes. I didn't make it to the other range opposite the rifle range on the t in the road. I was there 3 hours to shoot and picked up trash for 4 hours, not a great ratio but I hadn't planned on it being that bad. I live in San Lorenzo, about 2.5 hours south of there but I like driving so I will be going every other weekend to shoot and clean up what I can. I would like to join any groups that do clean ups in the bay area and meet some of the fellow shooters here. I have a pick up and years of driving tractors and such. Thanks everyone.

Hello jack!! I'm polo .....

Cow mountain could be nice place if people clean offer their selfs...
I volunteer to clean once a month.... First I used to clean right ofter ... Other shooter looking at me like I'm some kind of freak... Well people think its ok to leave garbage there ... What I do now is ill go in the ofter noon ... Start with the rifle range where the benches are. Then I pick all the bigger staff down the parking area. Usually is beer Cartons .... Then I cut back all bushes and branches on the road so we can pull over and let other vehicles by... Haven't get any tumb up just people laugh of my face... But I'll do it because I feel good doing it... Other people volunteer in hospitals / events ... I volunteer there... I'm not the only one cleaning.... Don't know who they are . but sure they do a good job cleaning .. If anybody shoots up there please clean ofter yourself only takes 10 minutes .

I think this is the water tank he's talking about... ~20 mins up the road.

Can someone confirm it's OK to do some target shooting there?

Im not sure where the water tank is...but people just shoot almost anywhere.... I don't think is very safe... For a long distance range try lake pillsbury.. There's is an rifle range in Boggs mountain haven't been there ... There is a group of guys getting ready to shoot and clean Boggs mountain on December 7 ... All calguns and CGSSA and calfire... I won't be able to make it...

Better hope that you and your friends don't get caught doing that --- otherwise the local LEO's are going to confiscate your gear, guns and steel targets.

It isn't considered part of the designated shooting area within the posted BLM Cow Mountain recreation area. I just helped to survey the area for BLM.

For others who go to Cow Mountain, be aware that local LEO have/do occasionally visit that range and have cited numerous people for different weapons violations (usually hi-cap mag violations), so please be aware ahead of time and keep your stuff legal, guys.

I met someone who actually goes there to shoot long distance every now and then and it's still ok to shoot there. Always good to call the local rangers to let them know you will be shooting and at what distance.

Ok, but, nothing prohibits shooing anywhere in the area other than too close to campsites and roads.

I don't think local leos would miss their naptime for a drive up the hill just to get laughed at.

Give an example. Broken glass and trash, if they witness it, yes, and they should.

Have been waiting 3 weeks to get everything ready to go up to the CM range to shoot and now my dad says since it's opening season up there you can't target shoot at the range without a hunting license. Is this true? I have to go out and spend $50 just to shoot paper targets? I am not nor will I ever be a hunter, but I love to set up targets 200-300 yds and shoot. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't believe it's true as this is a designated area for target shooting... I'm taking my DT SRS-A1 .260REM and shoot in safe areas of CM and never been told or read you couldn't but I've emailed the field office and will report as they respond to confirm!!
