Default Chabot Target Stands

Silly question. What are the target stands at the public rifle range? 2x4 Panels with card board?

I think the target stands are 4x4 or 2x4 posts with three 1x4 cross beams. The top two 1x4 cross beams have wooden brackets attached at each shooting position (two on the top beam, two on the middle beam) to hold cardboard target backers. The bottom 1x4 cross beam has the shooting position numbers on it.

You can kind of see how they look in this picture...

I went to their public range for the first time this weekend. I was a bit surprised to hear my bench number called about half way through my time there at the beginning of a 15 min session. Basically I was asked not to shoot at my top target as it was too close to the top rail. Mind you, all my shots were on paper and hadn't hit the rail, but I guess they like to be extra careful there.

I was using the 50yd small bore NRA target (4 targets in a square plus one above)...there is really no way to post it without either the top target or the two bottom ones being about 4" from wood.

After that I just attached them on their sides which worked ok.

Is that the 7 yard swat team in the picture? where have all the "Riflemen" gone?

Try 7-10" steel silhouettes on the 200 yard range offhand the 1st sundays of the month.

They're a bit round, that can't be your local swat?

Too many RSOs think they are running a target frame preservation society. Target frames are the cost of doing business at a shooting range.

yea but if they can save/reduce the costs, then why shouldn't they?

Sure there is a balance but some are just a PITA about it. The people that can't hit the broad side of a barn shoot all over the place and hit the frames, target stands, etc. seem to be fine. However, the people that actually can hit their target make the RSO nervous when they place the target close to the target frame get bothered.

Are there any benches on the 200 yard lanes that can be used for load testings?

Not sure what you mean by testing, but the 200 yard range is setup like Livermore's range (walls between shooting lanes) and there are wide benches at the line, just like the 25-100 range. Just not as easy to get to the targets

I think they don't like to see any targets placed off of the paper target they give you, off onto the cardboard part. For those who haven't been there recently they've started folding the standard paper bullseye targets to remove maybe the top and bottom six inches of white space before pasting them to the cardboard.

I don't see it as any big deal - there's plenty of room on the paper part to arrange smaller targets if that's your thing.

Wonder if sosuke has left some details out...

I fill up the entire cardboard with Monthly Rimfire match targets at 50 yard leaving me only 1-2 inches inside the frame...

...and the RSO will actually stand there on occasion and watch as I pull off 1 inch groups with my AR-7.

My guess is the white of one of his rows of targets overlapped the cardboard putting those targets edges right on the edges of the frame.

=8-)

I've been to Chabot a couple of times. Wasn't overly impressed with the range. the RSO's and some of the snothead shooters.

Sac Valley FTW.
