Default TriCare or VA Care?

I was medically retired at 50% Army/60% VA for some complications after my last deployment. After seeing/hearing/reading about all the horror stories w/ the VA would it be in my best interest to roll w/ tricare? I need to pick one soon but not sure which one

Any advice?

My wife and I have used va since my retirement in 2003. She just had her fourth major surgery since 2003 just a few weeks ago. Our care has been fine. If we used tricare, we would have had premiums and deductables to pay, va is free. Also since you are over 50%, they even pay you for your milage. Not to local clinics though.

I think to it is the local. The VA in San Diego was a bit beat down looking and I saw a line of cats waiting to be seen/admitted. The VA in Palo Alto is like the Taj Mahal. Very clean, short lines, well staffed, good cafeteria food.

Don't EVER go to the VA for anything. It is the worst healthcare system in the nation. If you have the option for Tricare, do that instead. At least they will give you a referral to see specialists in your area. The VA will put you on a waiting list, or make you drive to another one of their facilities but they WILL NOT treat you outside of their network. Furthermore, the doctors, nurses and technicians are amongst the worst in the business. If they were even halfway decent at their jobs, they would be working for ACTUAL healthcare providers.

I truly believe that the VA is TRYING to kill me. I had 50% disability for my back, and the VA was going to make me wait for over a year and a half to get surgery. My worst disc was herniated over 10mm, and they didn't do anything about it, except prescribe me Gabpentin, a drug that is known to cause suicidal thoughts, and actions. I think they are systematically executing us with prescription drugs!!!

Dont bother picking. Get your own health care. They have now lowered my disability payments because I refuse to go to them and they have never paid their required clothing allotments. Ever! They made the wrong medical decisions consistently and screwed up five yes (5) leg surgeries. I ended up paying a private doctor. He helped but was unable to reverse what the sadistic barbaric hack jobs did to me.

RUN!

Go with Tricare. Yeah, you have to pay, but its reasonable and you get choices and local doctors.
