Unhappy Rest in Peace, Sergeant Charlie Varga , Riverside County Sheriff's Department

A long time friend, and veteran member of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department passed away on Friday, June 28th. Sergeant Charlie Varga was a long time member of the Emergency Services Team (SWAT) and a firearms instructor for the department. Prior to joining the Riverside Sheriff's Department, Charlie was a US Marine, where he was also a firearms instructor. As an EST member, he maintained an excellent level of physical fitness.

He was my neighbor, and picked my brain about LE while he was still in th Marines. His children where the same age as mine, and his son was in my Scout unit. Our kids went to school together, played together, and grew up together.

Charlie was taken by that silent killer of cops, a probable heart attack, at age 51.

Rest in Peace, my friend. There are countless LEOs alive today because of the skills you taught them. You will be missed.

After 7 years this is considered a work related death injury. I lost my dad a 27 year veteran the same way in 1994. RIP Sgt Varga.

Poor guy lived less than a year after retiring. He was a good cop, great person, and he wasn't too bad of a shot either.

He was my neighbor, my reason for going Sheriffs over chp, my range master in the academy, he was a mentor, and he was my friend. I just saw him 2 weeks ago and introduced my girlfriend to him. We were planning a day to go shooting. He will be missed greatly. I am honored to have known him.

There are few words that can express the depth of sadness that I, or I expect anyone who was privileged to know Charlie can convey. He was an exemplary human being and will remain so in my heart. I was so honored to have him as my instructor for a little over a year now.
To Charlie's wife and family my deepest sympathy on the loss of your most precious husband, father, and grandfather. To all who served with him, he leaves a large space that will be impossible to fill; to those he worked with post-retirement and his students ~ you know what he'd say, "Get back in the fight." I am so grateful for the time I had with you Charlie. With God there is both quarter and mercy.

Retirement seems to be the most rapacious killer of (ex)LEO's... Based on just the people on this forum alone who knew him it seems he certainly made lasting impressions on and off duty. Rest in peace, brother.

I met Charlie several years ago when I took one of his classes. I found out about it down at the Shootist. After the first class, I took quite a few more and took my wife to one of his basic pistol classes. He was a really great teacher and an awesome person. It was a privilege to get to learn from him.
My son is on the job and called me the other day with the news. Very sad. I only knew him for a little while and he was one of those people you always will remember in a positive way. I know there are many, many folks that counted him as a mentor and/or friend that are feeling great sadness right now.

Carry on Charlie! We'll see you when we see you. Via con Dios.

Unhappy RIP CHARLIE YOU WILL BE MISSED BY ALL

I just found out about Charlie’s passing. My sincere condolences to all of Charlie’s family he will be missed by all. I just could not hold it together when I found out about Charlie being gone. I have known him since about 1989, wow it’s been that long.
No one who ever met Charlie could forget him; he would make you feel like family from the first hand shake. If he was busy or in the middle of something he would drop everything to say hello and ask how you’re doing. He was never too busy to offer a helping hand. He was the big brother everyone always wanted. Charlie was one of the finest and bravest men I have ever known and he will be deeply missed by all.

It did not hit me today until I was coming home and thinking. What would Charlie Varga say in this situation...

I apologize for being a necro poster but I just realized that Charlie Varga has passed away. And at the time I was stunned, but it did not really hit me; today it hit me.

This is a great loss. I knew Charlie when he spoke at the Citizen's Academy that was put on by Riverside Sheriff's Department. I remember we were at either the Jurupa facility or somewhere else out there but he came in and spoke about EST and what his duties were. It is funny how in that video he mentioned almost the same thing that he had told us like 8+ years ago. He said that SWAT does not sit down in some room working out waiting for a call to come in, no, he had an undercover car, which meant it was a navy BLUE crown vic (and he rolled his eyes when he said that) with no markings and he backed up other officers and did other things as well. He was a good guy and a great shot. I remember him being in Lake Elsinore driving around but in any event. I will miss him. He was a good level headed get to business kind of guy. He was a great model for police and citizens to follow.
