Default Need some help with paying for an out of state rifle.

I found a rare spike tactical rifle from armslist but the seller is in Arkansas. I have been looking for this rifle for quite some time and desperately want to buy it. The seller propose to send him a US postal money order and then he will send me the rifle to my FFL. I know this is very risky and I probably won't risk it as I would be losing nearly 3k if he decides not to send it.

What would you guys recommend I do? Is there any other method that is safer? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with Armslist, do they have seller rating? Try Gunborker instead.

For 3K I would fly out there to give it a good once over (even fire it if you're not going to make it a safe queen) and if it checks out, buy it and go with the seller to ship to your FFL.

There's no seller rating on Armslist. Its like craigslist.

Rare, looking for it for quite some time, 3k ... and a mere $500 ticket is gonna hold you back?

Talk to the seller and pay with Paypal via your credit card.

Tell the seller you will cover the PayPal fee which i beleive is somewhere in the 4% range.

Unless it is a discontinued item that you have to own, don't force a deal.

While your credit card offers you "some" protection, it is best to avoid sleazy deals.

Work out the inspection period and return options before you make the purchase.

3 day inspection period at your FFL and you cover shipping both ways if item is not acceptable.

A new item needs to be new. A used items condition is up for interpretation.

Good luck and post pics when it shows up

I was almost in the same boat a month ago. I asked the seller to name a few LGS close to him and have him bring the rifle to the one I chose. I offered to pay extra to the LGS to inspect and shipped the rifle. Once the rifle is inspected and ready to be shipped I will them send the money to the LGS. But the buyer backed out.
All in all I lost a few minutes researching the name of the store and emailing back and forth but no financial lost.

IIRC a FFL will not except an out of state transfer from a private seller. It must be transferred FFL to FFL.

There is absolutely no legal requirement for that.

I've shipped multiple rifles into CA.

Yeah I just dealt with this today. Sig 516 for 1100 and buyer wanted payment and wouldn't take to lgs so I could call to verify. Said no thanks. Too much risk

This! I've directed sellers to the DOj website that says its legal for private seller to ship directly to my lgs. Usually solves the issue although a few still insist. I just tell them to cover the ffl fees on their part.

No Armslist does not post the number of transactions like GunBroker. At GunBroker you can tell if seller is considered "trusted." Armslist shows nothing but how to contact the seller. Up to you

See what other listings the seller has, if they have many, and they are from different states run.

Ask them to perform this trick, have them place the rifle on the table, with a dinner setting (spoon, fork, knife) along with a place mat that has dinner is served written in red marker.

This is to verify they have the rifle in question and not just some photo they have stolen from another listing.

BTW - what spikes AR is worth $3K?

It's their 10th anniversary limited edition AR15.

This sucks, I can't find this for sale anywhere.

Armslist? Might as well blow that money on the tables in Vegas. Too risky.

+1, I wouldn't send someone I don't know $3k in hopes that it's real and not a fraud.

yeah i'd say skip it and save the hassle unless you can confirm some way that he's legit. I know it's great to find someone with something you desire for, but is it really worth it that much gambling on uncertainty without any credibility?

Either he is gonna save it for later or he never even have it. You still have your 3 grand so no lost there.

This is the best thing to do. You pick the FFL and arrange with them to inspect it first then ship to your FFL. A legitimate seller will not take issue with this especially if you cover fees and offer maybe a small bonus for the trouble.

An FFL won't **** around and try to scam you for a few grand, and you picked the FFL anyways so you can choose a reputable one.

A scammer will not oblige this request. If you're making any out of state purchase this is the safest way to conduct business. Remember, send your payment to the FFL, not the seller directly. You'll have to call around and find an FFL that will do this for you but most will if you are willing to pay more than their standard fee.

Paypal might not cover it but it allows you to use a credit card which has it's own protection.

I wonder (never hhappened to me before) if PayPal decides to cancel you account due to firearms related transaction how it will affect the credit card fraud protection?

I use PP all the time for private transactions but there's no legitimate fraud protection using a credit card to purchase a firearm since you're using paypal against policy.

Paypal will tell you to pound sand and so will your credit card company.

that's just how it is.

The only benefit to my buying firearms or ammo using PP and a credit card is that I earn travel points and it's easier than sending a MO.
