Default Met some LEOs at the Range Today

So I go to the range with my daughter and we meet some LEOs there, just having a good time. They were totally 2A, and even brought up the subject. Totally behind CCW (even though no way in LA County). Ranted about how stupid the gun buy-back programs are, etc., etc. Fun was had by all and I was so happy to meet these guys and get their perspective. Quite different from when they have their uniforms on.

As an aside, both of us shot like c^@p!

I replied "AM I BEING DETAINED????"

When I go to the range I start talking to myself so that nobody comes over and wants to shoot my stuff.

I try to stay away from LEOs when I have my guns with me. Even at the range. I was happy when my range put me in the other bay from the uniformed CHP types who were shooting the other week.

In the past when I have run into LEOs while shooting it has never been good. I am a lawyer and know the law and my rights, but many LEOs do not know the nuances of firearm law and sometimes start asking questions that no one should feel compelled to answer, such as:

1. " Is that gun registered?" (God knows what that means; at least for now you have to DROS your gun when you buy it in this horrible state but if it pre-dates the DROS system or you bought it in certain various other ways there is no obligation to register it.)

2. "Is that magazine legal?" This question speaks for itself.

The list is long. I avoid LEOs when armed. Many are good eggs who hate what is happening in this state as much as I do, but you cannot count on that.

It would be nice if all LEOs who don't really know the gun laws had stickers stating so stuck on their foreheads. But they don't so as a rule I don't discuss my firearms or give LEO'S any reason to discuss my firearms no matter how friendly an encounter may appear.

knock on wood but i have yet to have a bad (or good) experience with LEO in uniform at the range, including several incidents of shooting in the stall right beside them. have never had them say anything to me at all and vice versa, even if i peek into their lanes to see what they are shooting or doing or watch them for a little bit to get a pulse on how well trained xyz department might be.

I shoot with LEO frequently. Have for years. Never had a problem. Dont see what the big deal is.

In the 'early bullet button days', we were at Burro, on a private range. One of the patrol units stopped to see what we were doing. I saw them watching us, and went over to talk to them. Explained how the guns were legal, and why. They had not yet heard about off list lowers, or any of that. We invited them to shoot with us, and they seemed happy for the opportunity.

In that case, I assumed the role of "ambassador for the cause".

Attitude is everything, I guess.

My hope is that, by using it as a teaching moment, I've helped someone else down the line.

I'll admit to being rather jaded because of some negative encounters with LEO's in the past but I met the coolest LEO I've ever encountered thanks to Calguns.

I met him through the Marketplace forum for a FTF transaction, and he turned out to be a genuinely good guy, totally pro 2nd A, and thoroughly versed in "evil" firearms.

The shop we did the PPT in was a little slow and we shot the shat for almost an hour and I walked away with a totally new perspective. There actually are some in-the-know LEO's who are on our side.

A conversation overheard at the range:

"What do you have in there?"

(Pulls and clears weapon) ""Be my guest"

"Ah...Beretta 9mm.. 15 in the mag, one up the pipe. Open slide.... No feed jams"

"Yup...so what do you got?"

"4 inch Smith"

"Ah....six-shooter.... A lot of old timers carry those"

I have shot with a lot of LEO and have even met a few I thought where idiots. Attitude can defuse many bad situations. I never worry about meeting a LEO while I have my guns. They are all legal. I know my rights and can stay calm even dealing with idiots. Most supervisors are more reasonable if you don't get to belligerent with the idiots.

I bought a Gen4 G35 from an LEO a couple months ago. Got into a discussion about how lame the normal-cap ban was when he gave me the rebuild kits that came with the gun. Guy was cool as a fan.

The only guys I'm wary about at my range are the ones that come to shoot in dress shoes.
