Default What gear to get for CDCR academy?

There are a few things on the list that I figured I'd ask for an opinion on from seasoned LEOs here. I'm not looking to break the bank, but I don't want to buy generic stuff that will have to be replaced sooner than later.
  • Sam Browne belt or black nylon belt.
    Quote:
Black leather basket weave utility belt (Sam Browne) with brass buckle or nylon utility belt. No mixing of leather and nylon items.
    Quote:
Black leather basket weave duty belt, 1-3/4-inch width with gold, 2-inch square, four-sided metal buckle and will be worn with the Class B cargo pants, or black nylon duty belt.
  • Leather or nylon belt keepers (4)
  • Handcuff case, leather or nylon
  • P.A.D. case, leather or nylon
  • Flashlight (pocket sized)
I'd like to hear thoughts on something like the Streamlight ProTac 2AA. I'm leaning towards a AA flashlight as I already have rechargable AA batteries. Plus, AA batteries are rather universal so if I needed some "on the fly," they'd be easier to find than CR123s.
  • Leather or nylon universal radio carrier with retention strap.
  • Black leather weave or nylon key holder with gold colored key clips.
  • Black leather basket weave or nylon glove pouch.
While they do sell all of these things at the academy store, I figure some of these things might be better purchased elsewhere.

Nylon is better than leather. It is the 21st century.

Streamlight ProTac 2AA is a great choice. That is basically what I carry today. 30+ years ago I made the rookie mistake of getting a giant XL flashlight.

Do us proud

Nylon would be lighter also, but I think the Sam Browne would be easier to clean.

If you have a choice go nylon every time. Lighter (Your back will thank you), easier to care for & typically less expensive.

Don't skimp on quality. Go for something along the lines of Bianchi accumold.

If there's an academy store, I'd recommend buying it all there. It'll keep you from buying stuff that isn't approved!

Nylon gets faded real fast especially working in the sun. The less you have the better. Remember if you are posted on the yard you will be responding to alarms and having a bunch of extra stuff will hinder you. You would be surprised on how many people drop their **** when running to an alarm.

This is all you really need

1. Belt
2. Baton ring
3. Cuff case
4. Radio holder
5. Key holder

Another thing stay in shape and learn a martial art. The DT stuff they teach is useless. Nothing worse than getting your *** handed to you because you can't fight back or you are too tired. Batons will not stop a determined inmate. Inmates do not respect C/O's that are fat bodies.

Thanks! Unless I hear something compelling about why I should get something else, I'll be picking one of those up! It comes with a holster, so it's a combo deal too.

I wouldn't mind, but what's the quality of it all? I'm genuinely curious. I have friends in the current academy and they said the only things they bought there were the uniform clothing. The belt is like $20. I've been looking at a good belt for concealed carry and the only belts I've seen in that price range are the cheaper nylon "riggers" belts.

Understood, but do I show up to academy without everything I'm supposed to have, or do I just buy the cheaper stuff from them so when I don't use it later on I'm not out extra money?

You'll have to PM your number again. I'm not sure where it went. That, or stop by my dept. later, haha.

I'm not a officer there but I have a nylon duty belt and gear. Optics Planet has the Heros Pride nylon line of products that seem pretty good. I bought their alarm case here and it fits them perfectly.

I don't know how the CDCR academy is, but if it's anything like mine was, I'd much rather have and not need, than need and not have...

Exactly. That's why I want to get good stuff if it is something I'm going to need, well want, to last for awhile vs. buying cheaper stuff just to make it through the academy with the gear that is required for it.

If I was going to the academy, I would buy exactly what they specify, and probably from the academy store. You don't want to be a lone wolf during inspections.

Nylon? Yes, when you are out of the academy, off probation, one of the boys, etc. I have never seen or heard of an academy RECRUIT wearing a nylon duty belt when everyone else was wearing leather.

P.S. A nylon belt that comes with a free holster sounds like imported gun show crap. Quality duty gear is never sold like that.

Thumbs up

The academy store will be cheaper a few things but one thing to remember is that everyone in your academy could be in there trying to buy stuff. The store is small and loaded with stuff. if possible, go before your academy and buy the items ahead of time. Best if you can take the required items with you. Or if you know someone living in the area, have them buy it at the store fore you. Access to academy grounds are restricted, one has to stop in at the watch office and check in and the out when you leave. The first week is busy getting everything settled. Don't buy stuff because it looks "cool" there is enough time throughout your career to decide what extra thing you "need" not want. After you have worked an 8 hour shift and get ordered over for another 8 hours, that duty belt will get awful heavy on your hips and back. Keep it light. As stated nylon stuff is lighter but starts looking bad as it fades and gets dirty from sweat and what not. Leather is old school but will last longer, look better longer and can be kept that way with minimal care. Good luck and congratulations on your academy. Go there to learn and don't believe all the war stories you get told. I was an instructor there for 6 years, retired last year, did my 25 and hit he gate. There are some Sergeants there that are very knowledgable and will help all they can but like all places there are those that get big heads and will tell you (cadets) what you believe so take the "war" stories with a grain of salt. Again good luck, do what you are capable of doing and do it well! Oh, and some advice from an old timer, you mentioned a PAD case, get one with the belt loops (not the snaps on the belt loop) that slides on your belt. The snaps will get loose and you spend more time looking for your PAD case because it will keep falling off your belt. Don't buy too many keepers, you'll find a lot of them in the parking lot where people getting ready for work at the prison and they have dropped them. I think I bought maybe 2 during my career and the rest I found in the parking lot.

Just remembered, old age you know. Some things can be bought/ordered from Quartermaster. A uniform and accessory company. Most items are cheaper than local stores if you order online but you have to allow for shipping time. Their website is: QMuniforms.com I hope this helps and saves you money.

The input is appreciated very much! I haven't gotten a letter for academy, yet (fingers crossed ), but want to have everything that I can decided ahead of time just so I'm not panicking later. I do have a friend in the current academy so I suppose I can always have him pick me items up whenever the time comes. Thanks again for the input gents!

Got the call today (while we were on a mini-vacation in Monterey) and was offered a PFT appointment! I'll be going to the academy in September and won't have to relocate after either. After thinking about this off and on, to start I'm just going to go with the essentials from the academy store. I may even get some uniforms for free

Im not a CO but if your just going into the Academy then I would use what they have, see how you like it and what you need and see how your training changes your mind. There are 9 million places willing to take a cop/ soldier/ CO/ hosedragger's money and sell them the newest piece of gear. See how you do in the academy and if you graduate then go on a spree and buy some stuff.

It would be one thing if they provided me the necessary equipment, however, it's on me to buy it for academy.

I recommend a good pair of boots. I have had good luck with the 5.11 boots. They are light weight and durable. When you get to your institution you will need a good pair of boots. With some of the Med escort jobs you will do allot of walking.

I started out with a Streamlight and it lasted a long time. But they need to be recharged often and are expensive. I use an LED type of light now. It is just as bright and last longer on regular batteries. It even fits in my Streamlight holster.

Spend your money on a good belt. Get cheap cases and holders. A cheap belt will hurt and it will fall apart after a few years of use. Mine is 12 years old.

Get oversized uniforms to accommodate the vest.

Quartermaster is a good source for any gear you need.

If I were you I'd get a nylon belt. They are lighter and much easier to adjust to your waistline. I never owned one but I stopped using a Sam Browne for a Rothco tactical vest. Invest in long sleeve jumpsuits too. The academy makes you were short sleeve but I rather have long sleeve. There's nothing worse then searching an inmates cell and getting his germs all over your arms. Like someone mentioned above. Quartermaster has them for cheap but you get what you pay for. You can't go wrong with Transcon jumpsuits. They are the best! Don't spend a lot of money on a flashlight. I've been in the department for almost 8 years and never really use it. My flashlight was about $30 and it's bright enough to do the job. You also might need a jacket but don't buy one for the academy. They make you buy I certain version but once you get to your institution you'll be able to buy a better one. Like Springfield mentioned....boots are your best friend. Spend your money on boots and stay away from Big 5. Depending on your job you could be on your feet a lot. 5.11 boots are comfortable but I've had bad luck with them. They tend to split in the upper corners of the boot. Danners are nice but expensive and heavy but they'll last you for a very long time. If you have any questions about the academy itself just pm me and I'll answer any questions you need. It hasn't really changed that much since I went through.

My ProTAC 2L LED showed up today (yeah, I ended up going with CR123 just to match my other lights), and have a Streamlight Strion LED on the way. Maybe I'll just return the Strion then. I was looking at the 5.11 ATAC Storm boots. Want a waterproof boot since I'll be running in some rain I'm sure.

depending on the time of year you need a jacket, its not a hardcore stress academy so don't fret if you dont have anything, also you dont wear jumpsuits in the academy, its all class B's, near the end you'll order jumpsuits. Good luck, I left the dept last October and am very happy, its not what it use to be (according to the old timers). What institutions you guys going to? PM me if you dont want to state it publicly. I went through the academy in 2010 so I have info if you guys need it.

Nice! Glad the thread is helping others. I'm a bit tight on the budget right now as I wasn't expecting the phone call while I was on a vacation. If I hadn't gone on that vacation, I'd be fine, lol. Of course it works that way!

I was just given a bunch of short-sleeve Class B shirts and pants, along with some Class A pants and a Class A hat, for free without the "R" patches (I got told the story/joke about those). That really helps. Just need a long-sleeve Class B shirt and couple of pairs of Blass B pants as the ones I was given had been machine washed so they shrunk to a size just too small...literally by an 1". Time to hit the gym even harder perhaps instead...

I'm going to be ordering my boots online here in a minute and need to check the availability of a rig kit tomorrow for my duty belt.

Hmmm. Went from 5.11 ATAC boots to Danner Acadias. I think I'll go to my local shoe store tomorrow and make sure I get fitted for the exact right size first. Maybe they'll even have them since they are a dealer for Danner.

See what feels better for your foot. You will be able to buy two pair of ATAC boots for the price of one pair of danners but like I mentioned. They tend to split in the inner toe area. Danners soles are replaceable to they'll last forever.

For what it's worth- I don't work for CDCR, but have worn two pairs of 5.11 boots and they worked well. But also heard good feedback on the Bates line of tactical boots.

I ordered a pair of Danner Acadias today after the shoemaker that works at my local shop came out and measured me up. They didn't carry my size (15), but they will be here in 7-10 business days. Plenty of time to break them in and polish 'em up! "Buy once, cry once." I figure out of the gate they are more expensive, but they'll last longer than two pairs of 5.11s. My local shop resoles them for $60 too. When they get really bad, I can send them to Danner for a rebuild too which is pretty nice. The Strion showed up today and I opened the box up, put the RMA in it, and mailed it back for a refund. The ProTac 2L is going to be plenty, especially since it has a glass lens and not a plastic. I didn't know that until I read the info sheet.

Anyone know if BluMenthal Uniforms is good? I was going to order my two hats and Class B cargos from them as they have a 20% off coupon right now, but I can't find much about them review-wise. Perhaps my Google-Fu just isn't working right.

Hey Roush. Can you send a link of the class b cargos you are planning on getting. I'm a little confused on the pants to get.

Roush-

Blumenthal's is staffed with good people. They ARE a uniform store, so always a mistake here and there, but the service is excellent.
