Default My First ATF inspection. What should I expect?

I have been licensed out of my home for almost 5 years and have never been inspected by either the DOJ or the ATF. What should I be doing to prepare?

Just try to do all the right things and you shouldn't have a problem. Review the 4473s to ensure that you did everything right (last year).

I am not sure of what you need to do to prepare to go to jail, but soap on a rope is a good idea :-).

Hey, you will be with him, so he will have company :-). It is the standard answer on another forum, they just said that you are going to jail.

I have done the best I can but upon reviewing 4473's I start to notice things like the US Citizen box is unchecked, #12 is checked and someone just wrote thei middle initial. There must be more of the same. I have 222 4473's from the last 4.5 years.

There is not much you can do about past forms, although you could copy them and see if you can get the person to correct it. Not that anyone would know, but the 4473 is not to be changed after it is signed and you don't want to get caught making changes (different pens, different writing surface, etc. can make a different and be noticed).

#12 is not a big deal. What you need to do is to get into the habit of reviewing the 4473 CAREFULLY after the person fills it out. Then, when they come back, review it again.

When you notice things, you need to figure out how you missed it and what you can do to correct it. You need to take your time when doing a transfer. When you rush is when you miss things and/or make a mistake. It is not worth the "time savings" by rushing.

BTW, I had a person who just put a single letter for their middle initial, which I noticed and so I said something, but it turned out that is all it actually was.

For some of the CA inspection issues:

http://www.net-ffl.com/ca_doj_regs.html

For the CA DOJ, you need to make sure that you have ALL of the required signs up, with the correct min. size. The above link gives some of the things that they look for.

I have been giving out free locks with each purchase for almost 5 years. Is that going to be a problem?

We just signed up with the NSSF to have one of their ex-ATF auditors come out and do a full inspection on our policies/paperwork. Likely be the best 500 bucks I will ever spend. I gather he will spend as long as it takes to do a complete audit and review. Like I told them when i signed up, better them then someone with a badge doing it!

No, not even for CA purposes. I have taken to recording the make and model on line 30c for handguns but it's not necessary.

Why would it be a problem? It ensures that you are meeting the CA and Federal requirements.

You should document the lock for CA. There is no documentation requirement for the Feds.

Just finished our inspection with the NSSF inspector. Best 500 bucks I ever spent. Gave us great peace of mind as to how we are doing things.

He was a ATF Supervisor from Chicago back when he was with the ATF. Knew his stuff and did a great job going over our shop.

Absolutely nothing to fear from an ATF audit at our place.

WHEW!

Done three so far, Home Occupation, the funny thing about the first agent right before the 1989 Assault Weapon ban he said "this is going to make criminals out of you and me" he was pissed, the other two agents were cool too.
