Are there any outdoor ranges in Ventura county? Something with a minimum of 200 yards and maybe more or do we have to go up North?

Ojai Valley Gun Club has at least a 600 yard range (maybe more, I didn't measure it) and a 200+ range.

Are they open to the general public at all?

They do have a public shoot day... http://www.dock.net/ovgc/

My complaint is they are really far from the city. Over an hour into the hills from what I remember. I've been there once.

You could also check out Piru, they're a public range but again really far into the hills.

Heck, even the Glass Factory in SB is over an hour away. The one thing GF has going for it, it's only a few miles into the hills above SB. The other two ranges I mentioned above are several miles into the hills.

In other words VC sucks for anything outdoors unless you're willing to drive, especially shooting ranges.

If I'm going to drive that far I'd rather go to Winchester Canyon off 154 in SB.

I'd like to mention that Semper Fi in Ventura is hands down my favorite shop if you want genuine help and awesome deals on guns and ammo etc... Discovered them in June, and haven't been to another store since.

Yes, it is a nice place.

What I would really like to do, though, is also have a mellow place in the forest or BLM where I can take my two young sons and teach them how to shoot.

It would be a much nicer experience for them to not be constricted to a formal range, and have the freedom to shoot 'fun' targets (balloons, produce, plastic jugs filled with water, etc.). Also much easier to teach new shooters without a whole range of other guns continually going off.

Used to have a few places like that when I was growing up in Santa Barbara, but they got trashed and ultimately closed.

I really dislike shooters who don't take care of where they shoot...sigh.

Knights Tactical is a new shop that just opened in Camarillo. I stopped by and spoke with awhile back before they opened. I have not been back yet, so I can't speak to their selection. But the folks running it were very good people.

They should be open already. I know their website is a little off. They had a Facebook page with updates, but it does not seem to work at the moment. Not sure if it's private or just deleted. I don't use Facebook... I will stop by sometime during the week and report back.

Also, I know someone else mentioned it, but I think Anarchy Arms should also be on the list. They have been around awhile but recently opened a "retail shop" a few months ago. Small shop, but very nice guys (all former Marines). They carry basically nothing but AR-15 parts. I have not been there recently, but I bought a lot of stuff from them already. http://www.anarchy-arms.com/

Is there a 75 foot range in VC, preferably indoors? I need to sight in an AR-15. Island View is 55 feet. Piru is does not place targets closer than 50 yards as I recall (doing it at 300 is kind of a pain if you are by yourself).
Thanks.

Optics or irons? If optics just research "one shot zero method".

It's red dot and irons. Thank you for the advice, but last time I was at Piru, the ceasefires were something like twice a day, and besides that I had a hard time even getting on paper . So one shot zero is not very suitable there.
If there are no 75 footers in VC I am willing to drive to LA if there are any.

I have used a dirt berm 1000 yards away to get the next shot to break a ay pigeon. You don't need to be on paper to use the one shot zero.

Somebody asked if we had HSC cards. No, and here's why. I sent my request for cards and my check TWICE. The State of CA very graciously cashed my checks both times.....without bothering to send me any cards. Repeated calls to DOJ resulted in a determination that my apps had been lost. The person on the phone offered that I could send another one.....and another check. I opted not to. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Hope that answers any questions.

Does Griswold Brothers, or Glockworx belong in this list? There is also Big-Five and Dick's Sporting Goods. Lastly, Anarchy Guns in Ventura.

I wouldn't trust Griswold Brothers. They told me they couldn't even permanently pin and weld a BC1.5 to an AR barrel. Their excuse? Mismatched metals? Seriously? I took it over to another gunsmith and it looks great. Idiots!

Thumbs up Knight's Tactical - Camarillo

I visited Knight's Tactical this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. The owner, Craig, does the AR assembly himself. He showed me an AR15 he was working on; nice free float hand guard, oversize trigger guard, nitride bolt carrier group, KAK barrel, Aero Precision upper and lower, and standard 6 position stock and grip. All for 800.00 (January 2015). IMO, a really good deal. The store sells all the Magpul furniture for your AR (I bought a mid-length black MOE hand guard for MSRP - 34.95; I'm willing to pay MSRP as long as the customer service is good), and every part to complete your AR build. He has a selection of Glocks and Sig Sauer, a few revolvers, a few other brands. The store also has shotguns, rifles, and quite a few ARs. He can tailor an AR to your specifications. There was a selection of tactical gear, and even emergency food. I plan to come back and support one of the newest gun store in Ventura County. The store is located across the street from Woodranch Restaurant; across the 101 freeway from In-n-Out.

I just took my pistol upper that wasn't cycling into Knights Tactical in Camarillo this past weekend. The gas block was split and stuck on, and the gas tube was just gashed. They took care of me quickly and very reasonable on price.
