Dude, on Friday night, I opened the action up to bend my mag release back to normal. I didn't remember to capture the hammer spring and when I open the side plates of the action, pieces went flying everywhere! Since I was going to Appleseed the next morning, meeting a friend at 7:30, i wanted to get to sleep early, but instead, I stayed up until 2:00 AM to find the "hammer spring retaining plate". I hunted the entire kitchen, the shelves, the sink ...

I was so frustrated, it was my only 22 and I've totally ruined the weekend.

Then as I was giving up, I decided to search around the garbage can again and ... there ON THE GARBAGE CAN PEDAL sat that stupid stupid part. The pedal is black and has an indentation on it, the part is also black. If it was an inch or two in any direction, it would have fallen to the floor where I would have seen it in a minute, instead of making me DISASSEMBLE a shelving unit to look under it and HUNT UNDER MY FRIDGE AND DISHWASHER.

Ugh... so much frustration! BUT complete elation when I found the stupid thing.

I think the Boyd's stock is too thick inside the cutout and something definitely rubs.

I will try and install it again, not that there is no time pressure.

i normally disassemble mine between a hallway with all the doors closed. that way if something flies out, theres not much room to go except bounce off the walls.

or you can do it in a bathroom. close the toilet lid and plug the sink.

Greeting marlin 795 guys, I've got a question.

I have a 795 with a ringed / bulged barrel. AFAIK, I had a squib load followed up by a normal load, both remington subsonic rounds. It left a very small bulge on the outside, and a section on the inside that looks like a dark ring where cleaning patches are loose for 1/2 inch or so.

I see new barrels are reasonably priced, around $40-ish, and it doesn't look too bad to swap it out. But... if I'm going to swap barrels... perhaps I could put on a new model 60 barrel and get the extra few inches of sight radius.

Will a model 60 barrel work on a model 795 receiver?

Is the barrel locking pin pre-drilled on a new barrel? I have access to a machine shop if I have to drill it, just looking to minimize surprises.

Thanks!

SanJoseJerry.

I think a model 60 barrel should work. As far as I know (and I don't know much) the action is completely separate from the barrel, and the 795 action is different from the 60 only in the feed mechanism.

That's my 2 cents anyway.

PS. this might help

Yes a 60 barrel would fit. When it comes to the receiver and barrel they are the same.

From what I have read it is not easy to remove a Marlin barrel. Apparently they are pressed in and pretty hard to remove.

This guy did it... You might want to contact him:
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=411731

No idea about the locking pin sorry.

Edit to add:
Found this, might have some tidbits that you will find helpful:
http://misostudios.com/site/?p=183
Still looking for a guide I once read that showed a device a guy made to help pull and install his barrel..

Bushnell Rimfire scope/rings (need a new set of rings/one piece)

Walmart bipod (probably going to switch out for a UTG)

Boyd's Hunter stock in Forest camo.

If you have a Ruger 22/45, the set screws they use to fill in for the rail fit the Marlin front site hole perfectly!

Haven't shot it yet, but I suspect I'm going to need to fit the stock a bit. It feels a bit tight on the action, and somewhere it's causing the bolt to feel a tiny bit sticky.

I got one of these and it is awesome. If anyone is having trouble with creep on the scope mount (I had a heck of a time and tried a bunch of options) I would highly recommend this scope mount with some blue loctite. I have one mounted with a bushnell scope and I don't remove it, only use a bore snake and occasionally wipe out the chamber with ballistol and you can shoot the azz off a fly with it. It actually shoots worse/off if I do anymore than that. Anyway here is a link for the last mount you'll ever need: http://www.amazon.com/Instapark%C2%A...ef=pd_sbs_sg_4

im about to buy a 795...

is there a list of ammo that you should stay away from in general or is it a case of what don't work in others`may work in yours..?

with ammo prices the way they are don't want to buy a bunch of sucky ammo, seems the preffered ammo is tougher to find

Congrats and welcome to the family!

Marlin says not to shoot Hyper velocity ammo in the 795.
Standard and High velocity is fine. (Most rounds you come across will be high velocity)

No list of ammo to stay away from other than Hyper.

But people generally say that Remington Golden Bullets and the like are unreliable and poorly made. And that Winchester ammo is very dirty...

Heres one the factory suggests to use in the manual:
Quote:
CCI Mini-Mag
CCI Mini-Mag Hollow Point
Federal Classic High Velocity
Remington High Velocity
(Not Thunderbolt)
Winchester Super X High Velocity
Commonly suggested ammo are:
CCI Mini Mags
CCI Blazer Bulk
Federal Bulk

It seems that 795 function fine with either plated or wax coated bullets.
I prefer wax coated myself and use CCI 525 Value Paks exclusively thru my rifle as they group great (at what used to be a great price) and I have never had a failure to fire or feed in my 795.

Hi all. First post from a Non-Californian. I literally joined the site to make this post.

First of all thank you for the thread. This one thread might be the greatest single resource for the 795 on the net. I refer to it all the time and refer others to it when they're getting started.

But the reason I joined was to add two things that will hopefully be helpful. I've posted them on my Marlin board, but wanted to add them here as well.

First - a dedicated takedown tool.

I always hated having to go to the toolkit to take down my 795, and didn't want to lug around a hex key set, or take a chance at losing a nice one by carrying it by itself, so I got one of those super cheap $2-3 little pocketknife type folding hex key kits at Harbor Freight, took the 9/64 key off, slipped a key chain on, sealed it off with epoxy putty, and painted it with spray rubber (the kind for roof flashing). I put the keyring on the little "tab" of my soft case so I'll always have the tool whenever I have the rifle. Plus it's the perfect dimension for not letting me overtighten.

Second - A great pouch for 25 Round Promag Mags

It's called "MOLLE 2-Magazine Pouch, 5.56mm, M16/M4" or some variant - Shopping "M4 two mag pouch" always turns them up for me.

You'd be hard pressed to spend over $3 on one.

Hope someone finds these helpful and thanks again for the great thread!

The allen wrench, good idea, the magazine pouches, useless here as the magazines aren't legal.

Ah - there were already several mentions of those magazines and larger in the thread. I thought maybe rimfire were exempted. If I were up to no good I'd certainly rather have 10 x39s than 25 .22s.

In any case, this thread has well outgrown its original intended audience.

Standard capacity magazines aren't illegal to own in CA. You just had to own them before the ban took place, or, be exempt.

Is this rifle as hard to clean as it appears on the YouTube video? Breaking it down appears to be a major task. Do I really need to do that every time I clean it?

It's really not that bad.
Removing the trigger guard takes 2 screws, pull it off
Then pull the barreled receiver and action off the stock
Remove a plastic pin by hand, slide action off
Action does not need to be broken down any farther to clean it.
(I generally only take the action down completely to do trigger work)

The tricky part is removing the bolt.
Pull back on the bolt and lift it out at an angle
The bolt handle will fall away as you lift
Slowly releasing the pressure from the recoil spring without bending it.

Clean the inside of the trigger and trigger guard with a toothbrush.
Clean the action with a toothbrush and a little CLP if needed.
Clean the bolt with CLP
Wipe all the parts down till they are practically dry. Maybe put one drop of oil spread around the bolt if you feel a bit wild.

Reassemble in reverse being mindfull of the recoil spring again.

So that might sound complex but it is really really straight forward. You won't have to look at directions after you have done it once. The worst part is removing the bolt.

I really need to make the improved recoil rod that I have in my head. It would make it so much easier to take out and put back in. Too bad I have no idea where to start to have a prototype made and get them produced.. cheaply.

You probably do not have to break it down after every range trip. A bore snake down the bore would probably do you between cleanings.. Personally I break it down to its main parts and clean it every range trip.
Theres probably Marlin 60's out there that have never been taken down in decades that run fine...

Well, I took my 795 to USI today for the first time. Hot damn it was accurate and fun. Had it for 6 months and this is the first time I fired it. Love it almost as much as my 10/22. It is a much better value than the Ruger, that's for sure.

From today. Previous post shows my rifle if you are wondering.

I set up the scope and didn't think to check eye relief through x9, I was fighting that at the range. This was zeroed at 25 yards. Best group of the day, the rifle, and my life lol.

Measured: (3/16" I believe)

So far I've learned that the bipod was useless for this session, I needed to get the rifle lower to be more comfortable. Shooting from the bench. The scope needs to be readjusted for better eye relief. I'm probably going to get the one piece mount now. The action is a tiny bit loose in the stock, not tightened up enough. I need to tighten it and shoot again, but I think I left it a little looser than I'd like because there was an issue with the stock.

Barrel was hot/warm/primed, whatever you want to call it, and IIRC the first shot was that flyer because I jerked. My group also could have been better had I not shot 16 slugs through my Mossberg 930spx right before I hopped on the .22. My shoulder/arm was a bit twitchy from getting punched. First time shooting slugs as well, and not used to it...

I have other group pictures, but they are multiple groups of 3 shots, so I can't count/measure accurately. I think this stock greatly helped, I'd recommend spending the coin on it if you are on the fence.

Just became part of the Marlin 795 club. So stoked and this is my first rifle to own. Came out of the military awhile back and this seems like the best deal to have fun with and have something to have the wife learn to shoot with while fitting in a budget. Been stocking up on .22lr for the past two weeks since its so hard to come by. Going to the range on Saturday and I'll have a range report hopefully that night or just after. Just gave it a great cleaning and installed tech sights on it and other than that I think that is all that it needs. I haven't fired it yet, but I think I'm in love.

P.S. I didn't know how lucky I was to be able to score 2 10 round magazines for it last week from midwayusa. Does anyone know where to find magazines for this thing or is it just luck of the draw in these tough times? I swear finding a magazine in stock is like finding the fountain of youth right now.

Commonly suggested ammo are:
CCI Mini Mags
CCI Blazer Bulk
Federal Bulk

It seems that 795 function fine with either plated or wax coated bullets.
I prefer wax coated myself and use CCI 525 Value Paks exclusively thru my rifle as they group great (at what used to be a great price) and I have never had a failure to fire or feed in my 795.
subsonic ammo wont cycle in a 795 but to be fair they dont cycle in most autoloading 22lrs
