Default PPT in San Diego

Where do you guys do your transfers in SD?

I was looking at Gussler's but they are closed on the weekends.

Has anybody tried Hillcrest Pawnbrokers? I believe they charge $45 for the transfer + DROS

Thanks

The price is $35 for a PPT. Set by the Ca DOJ.

Any more is just an illegal money grab.

Gussler is a good guy to deal with but he is at the range on weekends.

I have had good experiences at American Shooting Center on Rufin Road. If you are transfering an AR lower, they require a bullet button. I have gone to Turner's, they always have a line, but they will do a PPT without problems if you take a number and wait.

Gusslers is good for every transfer.

Discount Gun Mart at both locations is good for every transfer. Morena is probably the fastest I've been in and out.

Royal Pawn on El Cajon in Normal Heights/North Park is an easy shop to PPT and deal with and they occasionally have stock on stuff that no one else in the city has.

Wiser Owl in Miramar is the cheapest place to do non-PPT. They are a smaller joint so it is usually pretty quick to do any PPT.

Powaw Weapons and Gear is pretty quick about PPTs. Also pretty quick since there aren't usually many people in there.

P2K needs certain employees on staff to do transfers, so you need to call in advance to make sure when they can do it. We showed up right at opening and the guy told us we'd have to come back at 12 to do the transfer.

Turner's has a long wait and occasionally when I called they said "we aren't doing PPT right now, too many customers", and I've also had them say $125 to do a transfer on a lower.........Can't quite figure that out.

American Shooting Center has come up to me the two times I've tried to do PPT there and after asking if I needed help, and me saying PPT, they blatantly moved on to the next customer and told me it might be 15 minutes so they can get to paying customers first. The one worker told me my last time there that she refused to transfer a Saiga because "it's a grey area with the ATF" and she straight faced told me to go down the road to Turners because they would do the transfer no problem. I tried to have a stripped lower shipped to them years ago and they refused to bring it in for me because "stripped lowers are a grey area with the ATF". I have subsequently refused to do any business with ASC, frankly because they don't want my business.

mievil, I agree with you about ASC!!

OP, Gusslers is great cause Don is a real good guy. Wiser Owl would be my humble second choice recommendation, followed by DGM Santee.

Thanks guy! Looking at the list of FFL, I might go for wiser owl since it's location is very convenient for me.

It says on their website $35 including DROS.

I am confused at Gussler's pricing

◾FFL transfer $40.00
◾DROS (Dealers Record of Sale/Background Check) $25.00
◾DROS (Reduced) $21.00 (Multi Hand Guns Only after 1st)
◾Use/Sales tax of purchase price of firearms/accessories

Does the price for the FFL transfer include the DROS?? Thanks

No. Check our Parallax Tactical up in Miramar if you want low price. Wiser Owl has full safes right now and isn't doing any FFL transfers at the moment.

Poway Weapons and Gear or Iron Sights are the two I usually use.

In my experience, ASC is terrible when it comes to PPT.

If Wiser Owl is close to you, give them a call to make sure their safe is still full. Should have stuff rotating out so you might get in.

Otherwise, try Parallax or even Team Big Shot. I don't have experience with doing transfers at either shop, but I've purchased at both and they are both very good, but you'd have faster service at Big Shot. People love to
Congregate and mill about in Parallax which makes it difficult to get help. Great place, though! Neither place is easy to get on the phone because of call volume so you'll have to physically go in.

I sent an email to Wiser Owl, awaiting reply. I am going to send an email to Parallax as well. I will let them know in advanced the day of transfer so they could accomodate me.

I personally thought the BBQ was meh. However, I absolutely love the sandwich shop next door. Oooooohhhhhhh good stuff, and the guy working the sandwiches is a hoot!

He is required to pay the sales tax, so it makes sense that he collect it. Many FFLs were not aware of the law, plus the BOE changed their view on sales tax from out of state private sales.

In general, no, but if the FFL gets involved with finding the buyer or seller or gets involved with the price, then it would be subject to sales tax.

+1 for Wiser Owl, although some rules are different for different FFL's such as whether doing a PPT requires the gun being sent from another FFL or whether the private party can send it straight to the FFL (if that made any sense).

It is my understanding that a ppt requires both p to be there.

FYI: For anyone using Wiser Owl, call first to make sure they have room in the safe.
I called last week about having 2 firearms shipped in. Said they won't be doing that for a couple more weeks due to lack of room.

I emailed them and the reply to me was

"No appointment necessary a long as we are open. You can pick it up at a later date but it can't be over 30 days. See you soon!"

Maybe Ok for walk-ins but not for shipped items.

Re: hillcrest pawnbrokers

Bought online new from Buds Gun Shop - had my pistol sent to hillcrest pawnbrokers. Guys were rude on the phone when I called (buds dropped the ball and didn't send me my tracking info and the gun ended up sitting at HCPB for a month since I couldn't get a live person on the phone).

Did I get hosed? (in my opinion I did)on their "Internet transfer fees"? If so I will definitely not send another NEW gun there for transfer unless somebody tells me that's normal??!

DROS 25$
Internet (bull*****?) fee 65$
Firearm from buds xxxx$
Sales tax: 70 something bucks. (I thought the best reason to buy online is to AVOID the local sales tax)

Thoughts? I've never bought a new gun online before. Always bought in-store or ppt.

every gun store will charge you the sales tax, a few have been burned in the past for not doing it (and i believe letter of the law says they must). you only avoid tax on items you can have shipped directly to you..

Yeah the sales tax I heard about at my last ppt I did. That was something I expected but got away without that last time

More curious about that 65 Internet fee.

While both people have to go to the same FFL, they don't have to go at the same time, although the FFL might require it. The FFL can fill out a DROS worksheet and have the first person sign it. Typically it would be easier if the seller comes first since you need the firearm information.

The "Internet fee" is the FFL fee for doing the transfer. They are doing a service and need to be paid. They are not making a profit on the sale. Do you expect them to do it for free?

Sales tax is required to be paid. While you might get away with not paying sales tax on items you purchase, you are violating the law by not paying it.
