Default New Handgun

Greetings, new to the sportsshooting scene. Saw some awesome videos on youtube and wanted to join in on the fun.

I saw there was a place in piru, and oxnard and ventura hand ranges. Looks like the oxnard one had the best rates for just shooting, but I'd like the moving type tragets too. Anyone remember hogans alley?

I'm looking into getting a handgun .9mm figured it would be smart to start saving up ammo and have had a hard time finding much. 50rds go really quick!

Once I find my gun is it safe to take to the range right away or better to clean it first? How often do I need to clean it? Like a car after so many miles, Or every range trip?

I did find some tulammo from russia, passed it up because of the steel case was that the general idea? I checked the next day and all 30+ boxes were gone so I guess it's not too bad? .22 ammo is impossible to find but .45 .40 .38 30-06 is around.

Thanks for helping a new idiot in town

I think I remember Hogan's Alley that was from early Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry movie...correct?
I've never seen a range like that one anywhere ever.
I think you're correct the 9mm is a great way to start low recoil get powerful enough to be affective. yeah 50 rounds do go quick that's why 22 ammo when it used to be an expensive was the way to go.
in my opinion you don't have to clean your gun right after you buy it but remember before going shooting with it to wipe it down especially the inside of the barrel to remove any grease oil that was placed there by the factory to keep it looking good is totally removed. I think it's best to clean after every trip to the range but I know people who go years without cleaning the guns. always keep a very light coat of a good gun oil on everything to try and prevent rust.
you should check with the ranges in your area some do not allow magnetic ammo. some just don't want the bullet to be attracted to a magnet and just a few others don't like the steel cases.
it's a wise man who plays an idiot and it is a idiot who says he's a wise man.
I hope that helps you welcome to Calguns.

Welcom to calguns. Get whatever handgun you can shoot the best. Go to the range and test different handguns. If you are looking for a 9mm handgun that you can rely on and bet your life on, GLOCK 19. Can't go wrong with a glock. As for the subject of cleaning; after every range use is best but, as sealocan stated above people go months to years without cleaning. Good luck on finding your handgun. Welcome to the shooting scene. Its a blast. Pun intended. Hope this helps.

Just a quick note. There is a monthly Calguns shoot at Islandview. You could go one of those shoots and meet fellow Calgun members, and probably get to try out their handguns. If I ever make it to one of them, I would be happy to let you test drive my handguns. That would give you a good idea of what gun you would like to buy, while testing a wide range of different guns at one time.
