I have a 44 mag Ruger Redhawk that came to me with Pachmyr presentation rubber grips and enjoy it. 44 Special is nice, and adequate for home defense. 44 Mag is harsh but tameable and great for back-country defense against large critters.

I previously owned a 629 and it was a troubled relationship from the start. It looked terrible to me with the factory rubber grips. So I swapped out for some classic "coke bottle" wood grips which looked fantastic. Unfortunately I couldn't shoot it for beans with the wood, no grip, kept shifting in my hand under recoil and biting my thumb with the cylinder release. I'm not shy of recoil per se, but if you can't manage the gun with the wood grips and can't stand how it looks with decent rubber grips, Houston, we have a problem. Eventually sold it.

BTW the Redhawk is still one of my favorite and most trusted handguns. YMMV.
