My advice is to stick with what the professionals (LE) use. Within what is likely to be a security guard's budget, that would mean something along the lines of a Glock, Springfield Armory XD, or the Smith & Wesson M&P, 9MM or .40S&W.
There are others, but within the range of reliable, polymer frame mid caliber pistols, those are probably the three that have broad LE acceptance (meaning their reliability and performance has already been vetted and is well established.)
I personally prefer SIGs and HK's, but they will cost you a lot more, and since you are fairly new to handguns, you'd be better off spending that extra cash on ammo and training.
