You need quite a bit of spring tension on the end of the string as they expand when heated. Otherwise they will become slack when you run the current through them. Too much tension and they will just snap.

I tried using thin copper wires and they heat up real quick, but gets too hot and just snap. Power source is another issue. You need to regulate the power but have enough juice to not let the wire cool off too much while cutting.
