You cant go wrong with www.tac-1.org, they are all LAPD range instructors or above and teach an 8 hour course that is everything you need to know from handling to marksmanship.
From there they have a number of advanced course that are truly advanced and a lot of fun. classes are all taught in the san fernando valley.
I think training in advance is a waste of money unless youre doing it for you and not just on the assumption that itll help you get a ltc. If youve got that kind of time/money go for it. Otherwise i wouldnt bother. The application has no spot for that information and it would only come to light if (yup, i said IF) you get an interview - even then, i highly doubt it would be a reason for granting or refusing you a license.
