Don't get me wrong, I doubt I'll take part in each type of competition. It's just that being active duty, I could get stationed somewhere where my only option is just one. I don't want to limit my options.
IPSC is the global governing body, but USPSA is the American governing body. The Glock 34 is perfectly legal in USPSA Production Division.

The three guns I would look at, if I were you, are (and not in any order of preference):

S&W M&P Pro (5" model) in 9mm
Springfield XDm 5.25" Competition in 9mm
Glock 34

All of these guns are perfectly usable in USPSA, IDPA, and Steel Challenge. Pick the one that you like the most, and then find a nearby club that offers the type of shooting you want to do.
