Plenty of bad info in this topic. Night hunting with lights is legal in almost the entire state for coyote and non game animals. The only closed area is the southern part of the central valley and an area by the bay. You can never night hunt if there is a big game season open in that zone. Roughly all the national forest is limited to 9v light on head or in hand. Roughly all the desert is any power of light and it can be weapon mounted or from a car as long as that car is not on a public road, and not moving. Apparently no one here has considered reading the regs. It will take about 2 hours for u to outline the night hunting zones by reading regs. Some county, like san diego, and san bernardino, have other laws that prohibit night hunting in all and some areas repectively. You will be stopped, you will be harassed. LE dont know the regs. Carry the laws and maps with you. People see spotlights, dont know regs, and call the cops. Go to predatomasters forums for info on how to hunt song dogs. I recomend byron south coming to the call part 2 and 3 to get u started. Low power scope on .223 is perfect. You are only required to pick up game animals. Again its all in the regs so read up. Good luck, and dont use a hmr unless u want to practice tracking....
