As someone else pointed out, becoming a reserve police officer or deputy Sheriff might be what you need to get your foot in the door. You'd receive the training, a P.O.S.T. certificate after working the minimum amount of hours, experience as a "part-time" LEO, and something positive to talk about when you test for a full-time position.

During my 31 years as a full-time LEO, I worked with numerous reserve officers, and several went on to become full-time officers (One of them wasn't sworn in as a full-time LEO until he was in his mid-50's, and only after going through the full police academy training!).

Military service wouldn't hurt, either.

The thing of it is, the main driving factor has to be your full commitment. If you WANT something bad enough, you don't just quit after a few set-backs.
