Depends on the purpose. The MSR MiniWorks EX Microfilter works great for around 2000 liters on each filter. That's over 1 year of filtration for one person. Can filter water for any use.

The Lifestraw is my filter of choice for hiking, backpacking, BOBs, etc because of the price. For $25 you get 1000 liters of drinking water. They were designed for use all over the world in disaster areas and third world countries, but available to the general public for sale. If anyone can find a system that works better, in that price range, I'd love to see it.

There's 2 I have experience with, I'm sure others will chime in with their filters of choice.
