Shooting the S&W 500 for the first time.

Some back story. My Uncles wife bought a S&W 500 for my uncles 40th birthday recently. Yesterday was the first time we have been able to make it to the range with this monster.

My first impressions are the thing is heavy and over sized. I was expecting to need some chiropractic service or maybe expect a trip to the emergency room to repair my wrists due to the recoil.

So you can see how big the round is, check out the side by side. The round of the right is a .45.

Well the recoil wasn't as bad as I thought is was going to be. I myself will probably never own one because the cost of ammunition. 12 rounds were close to 50 bucks with tax.

Here are a few videos of us having some fun with his new present.

Uncle Jason:

Here is what this monster does to watermelons:

Cheers ;)

Very cool!

What kind of load? Many manufacturers these days load .500 S&W to the .500 Special level for recoil control :(. Look up the velocity and bullet weight.

Hot loads will push your arm higher no matter how you hold it and will show a flash even in the daylight due to all the unburned powder in the short barrel and the muzzle brake.

Try shooting the 2 inch barrel. My wrists were not happy with me.

TKM 07-06-2012 8:49 PM

Ballistically, it's just about the same as a 3 inch 12 gauge slug. Just easier to carry.

It is the perfect home defense round.

Close your eyes and crank one off. Everybody else in the house will go deaf and blind. You will only be deaf..

P.S. I use speedloaders, you never can tell when you are going to run into those "28 days later" fast watermelons.

How many watermelons must die??!!! Pretty awesome man

misterjake 09-18-2012 2:45 PM

You can reload for it and it will pay for itself within the first 100 rounds.

Shooting paper with .500 doesn't make sense, watermelons on the other hand.

Awesome watermelon damage!

Often seen for sale "like new with ammo included" (box minus - 5 rounds) :D

Crazy power, it explodes the watermelons to juice and small chunks...I would not want to be the sad sob, that try to rob your house... Lord have mercy...

On the other hand it's perfect for CA, there will be nothing left to try and explain them selfs..

How much per bullet??

prob reloaded himself

I wear a glove to help manage the recoil. It is not a monster to fear, it is managed power to precision, though I have the long barrel and curious if the shorter barrel experience is any big difference.
Great fun.

LOL super funny... To the OP, I would love to have this gun...but it would just sit in the box...cost of ammo is no joke thats for sure... but hell, I'll take it as a gift any day!!!

Definitely not a cheap gun to shoot! But... if you don't reload there are some lower cost options out there than what BLACKBIRD mentioned. For instance, the 300 grain JHP load from HSM can be had here for $24 for 20 rounds (what a deal, right?) http://www.venturamunitions.com/cate...?sort=priceasc

Good ol' YSA range, huh? It used to be great until Jeff left and now they have actual kids (~18-ish) as ro's; don't allow anymore steel targets PERIOD; and....well I won't go any further. It's still a good place to sight in a firearm, but the quality of the employees has made it so, instead of going there every other weekend, I go maybe once or twice a year. Very sad. Jeff was the coolest R.O. ever (as long as you knew how to be a safe shooter) and is SORELY missed.:(

By the way, that S&W500 is a beast of an awesome revolver! If you look in Webster's next to the word "badass", there will be a little pic of the 500 right there next to it.;)

That is definitely not a handgun for a non-reloader (unless you have money to burn, I suppose).

Indeed! :p

Blackbird, thanks for the pics and the vids. That truly is an awesome revolver. Keee-RIGHST.

Just make sure you keep your hand/fingers away from the cylinder/frame gap. A guy made the mistake of cupping the gap with his off hand last weekend shooting my S&W .460 -- he went to the emergency room for stitches.
