For those of you using the Post 9/11 GI Bill, I have a question!
Hey guys, I'm about to be home from the Army the beginning of January. I'm trying to start school as soon as it starts up, the end of January. I'm starting the whole VA application process ASAP. My main question is, when can I expect to receive my first BAH payment? A house I'm looking at moving into really depends on this. Thanks in advance.

Usually about a month after you start classes. That's when I got mine at least, and this IS the VA...your mileage will vary.

usually your first month, as long as you attend all the orientations and all your units are certifiable. You'll have to meet with the counselor to come up with a education plan. Only those classes on that education plan can be certified. If not, you wont get paid. Ask me how I know...

I got my first check the month after classes started. Given the dependability of the VA, I would reevaluate "needing" your BAH to cover housing.
You also have to consider that you only get paid for days you are in class. If class starts on the 20th of the month, you only get paid for those last 10 days. |
Id talk to the VA representative at your school to make sure you're on the same page. Plan for "glitches" in the system, I know plenty of people over/under paid on the regular. I was one of the first classes that got you use the Post 911 GI Bill, It took about 2 months or soo to get my first payment with back pay. Only took about a month after we reapplied.
Also, I know few people that couldn't attend the classes due to the VA payment coming in a few days late. So just plan for the worst that way you aren't caught with surprises. |
Thanks for the replies. I'm saving my money right now for the bad scenarios, and I have heard of the VA issues. Looks like it's going to be a fun ride.
