We saw the post as well, it is unfortunate. The show is still on though.

Hey Jacob, I can do all day on Friday the 31st. Instructor or mag loader.

AlaskaGuy 05-13-2013 3:34 PM

If the show starts on June 1 at 9am, what time should we show up? Do we just say "we are with the band" at the gate?

Thanks!

TackyDriver 05-16-2013 4:13 PM

Do you still need anyone? I'll do whatever you need on any of the days. If you need, I can be on standby in case someone can't make it. Just give me enough lead time, if you can. Email sent yesterday w/ my phone #.

Turner's Sports Fair

I volunteered for this last year. I spent about $100 on fuel (no problem, I knew I'd be paying for that,) then I got dinged with the parking charge as well as admission... All so Turner's could make a buck.

When I complained, the response was: "oh. sorry."

There was no offer of re-imbursement for either the parking or admission fees.

Fool me once...

patrickm576 05-29-2013 4:14 PM

I may be interested in volunteering this Friday as an instructor. Do you still need volunteers? What are the requirements?

I was there last year and paid nothing (except of course for the personal expenses). I got a free parking right nxt to the booth, free lunch and free stuff from different companies who are there that supports CALGUNS. The best part of it was meeting the great guys from CALGUNS.

Sorry to hear bout what happened to you last year.

baptizer71 05-29-2013 9:42 PM

Jacob,

Are you going to send us PMs of phone # to call just in case we will have problems at the gate? thanx. Looking forward to see you guys this friday.

Volunteered Friday. It was my working introduction to the CalGuns organization.

The Turner's youth shooting booth was well organized and run. Turners provided 5 brand new Ruger 10/22s, 5 TruGlo holographic sights, a metric b@ttload of magazines, and (gasp) all the 22LR an unreasonable man would want.

The shooters ranged from 2 to 18 and were all happy and eager to learn. Some were frankly amazing, like a quiet little girl who had never shot before, yet with the iron demeanor of a practiced long range shooter, put 17 out of 20 shots into the bowling pins at 40 yards.

Major props to Turners and CalGun's Jacob (Pennys Dad) for a job well done! Fun day!

With this intro, I look forward to working more with CalGun's efforts.

Yep, I was out there all day today and had a blast working with the kids. It's just cool when they are done and have nailed a few pins and walk away with that big grin on their face! :D CG can count on me for future events! :oji:

Thanks Calguns for letting my kids and I come out and help. It was a lot of fun seeing all the young kids take their first shots and learn a little about firearm safety.

I had a nice discussion with two parents as their child was shooting. They said it was great their child was getting a chance to learn about firearms and that they weren't only used for 'bad' things. Kids that don't grow up scared of guns are going to be fantastic additions to our community.

Great job to all helping out w/ this! Thank you.

The feedback/after action reports are awesome as well. Some of the best stuff to read and uplift on this site, bar none. Keep the feedback coming. :D

@ alaskaguy, nice assist. Put them kids to work, right? That's what you call a win win situation.

It was a blast helping the little kids, not so little kids and adults shoot a firearm for the first time. Seeing their big smile after the first shot, was worth helping out after a 24 shift, then going back the day after the fair to a 48.

badreligion 06-03-2013 8:25 PM

Penny's Dad, Turners and all the other volunteers. I want to thank you all for the great time I had on Sunday volunteering my time to help new or inexperienced shooters enjoy the day. Two of the best memories from the day were a 7 year old little girl and a 2 year old little boy.

The 7 year old little girl was very affraid to shoot the gun so I took an extra minute or two to explain how the gun worked, the size of the round and some basic safety. She was still scared when she fired her first round and by the end of her first magazine she had a little smile. By the end of her second magazine she had a definite grin. She ended up coming back 2 more times and was really having fun shooting. Mom and Dad looked very happy too.

The 2 year old little boy was too young to really explain what was going on but I still took the time to show him a few little things. When it was time to shoot he squeezed the trigger as hard as he could but his little hands just didnt have the strength. Worried he wouldn't be able to fire the rifle I quickly came up with a solution and stuck my finger through the trigger guard and had him pull it to fire the rifle. He looked a little shocked when the rifle fired but by the end of his second magazine he had a little smile.

One thing I tried to do with many of the young shooters was to have them turn in their chair facing the parent corral so that mom or dad could get a quick picture after they were done shooting.

This is the second time I have volunteered as range staff under the guidance of Penny's Dad and it just keeps getting better.

Oh and if Turners is interested in selling one of those 10/22's I might be interested in buying one for my youngest son.

Wess
