My DIY target stands.
Made these target stands last year and figured I'd post them up here. I used about 1" PVC pipes quick dry post cement and some wood.
STEP 1: Make two "U" shapes using two 90 degree bends and three pieces of PVC (gluing all joints together) STEP 2: Fill with the post hole cement (shaking left and right to fill the whole "U") and saturate with water. Let stand for a few hours. STEP 3: Use two "T" PVC connectors to connect the "U" pieces together and and add about 1 foot of PVC sticking straight up from the stand. Put cement in the top of the "T" shape and fill it up about half way (Saturate with water and let sit). STEP 4: Cut 2x1 pieces of wood to appropriate length and slide them in the stands. The pieces of wood are very cheap and have held up all year. The stands are very durable and have held up to the strong winds at spenceville and in Nevada. I just use scrap cardboard and a staple gun to attach the cardboard to the wood and the target to the cardboard. I have since attached a long rope to each stand in case I wanna pack up and go home before the range is clear (I can just reel them back in). nice.. guess you can just use 2 pairs of u-bolts and hammer them to the ground in case of windy day?
how about a spring-loaded one that returns back to vertical after a shot? :) |
That would be cool lol, It's full of cement now so it hasn't had any trouble staying upright during the wind... even a few VERY windy days.
Mike good job. Spensville correct?
Yep, my favorite place to shoot, as long as you go on a quiet day.
Yep... looks like Spenceville. It's a shame to see all that junk.
We always try to bring a garbage bag up and clean up all we can (And the whole range is clear of brass by the time we're done ;) ). But yeah it has gotten messy. Some people will leave behind entire appliances.
I was even considering brining a U bolt to pound into the ground behind the stands and putting another rope on the back as kind of a pulley system to bring the stands in and out at the range (So I don't have to wait for the cease fire). I think that might be more trouble than it is worth though.

I like your idea to fill the PVC with cement. No need to hunt for rocks. Thanks for sharing! :D

These are on my to do list now.
Cost me about $20 for both of them... Could have been done cheaper. I made them just the right size to fit in the trunk of my Honda Accord.

coolbeans dude!!!
Great idea, I wonder how this would look expanded to a gong stand

Great idea, especially the cement. Trip to Home Depot this weekend! |
Probably was a 1x1 then...
I made literally the same stand like 3 years ago and its still going strong. Couple sandbags on the base for windy days
:King:
I also made the same stand, but I haven't had it out in the while as I've favored shooting steel.
The concrete is the only real innovation in the design (although even that may have been done before). I have been in very strong wind and had no problems with it tipping over yet. They really aren't that heavy either!
