Who is Shooting More Than Me?

between now and early October I'm forecasting tho shoot 5,750 rounds of shotgun shells. This is only registered and non-registered shoots. Does not include practice (probably another 1,000)

My trend line per month:

I shoot more than you. Last year was 12,000 shells, this year will be closer to 14,000. From January 1st to April 1st, I've shot 6,000 shells

epic1856 04-04-2013 11:23 AM

nice, you reload? What shotgun(s) are you using?

Newshooter 04-04-2013 12:26 PM

I am in for at least 12,000 shells this year between trap and sporting clays. Registered, non-registered, practice, fun and etc...

The only way I can do this is to reload.

So we know where your retirement accounts are! Ammo baby!

Khanan 04-04-2013 3:40 PM

Please don't make me think about this. I will quit shooting if I actually calculate how much I shoot.

ysr_racer 04-04-2013 3:50 PM

Are we talking about trap, skeet or sporting clays ?

RayPDA 04-04-2013 5:20 PM

For practice/fun, registered NSCA, trap club shoots, skeet, etc....both in my guns and those of others (does include rounds shot thru mine by others).

I'm fortunate to be able to shoot a fair amount...but still a bit envious of those who run 1k plus in shells/targets in competition alone..they're troopers! Then there's guys like YSR who get to travel to all sorts of cool places and then shoot...

sundayduffer 04-04-2013 9:04 PM

300-400 shells a week is all i can afford. I dont reload.

Ya, I buy powder and shot buy the 55 gallon drum, and I get 8-10 reloads with my win AA or rem gun club hulls. I use 17.6 gr of Alliant Extra-Light with a clay busts CL0078-12 wad and Fiochi 616 primers. I shoot a browning 625 sporting, but I'm buying a kolar max skeet in the next month or so! Reloading is the only way I can shoot as much as I do, the older guys at the club got me started and than I saved and made the investments to get everything in bulk

For you 12g reloaders: how much does each reloaded shell come out to be (not counting reloading equipment, just raw materials)? Assume shells are free.

Factory 12g shells cost me about $.25/ea. Then again, i only shoot about 50-100 shells/month.

I'm at $2.50-$3 a box, but I'm loading loads that would cost approximately $10 a box from the local range

How are you able to get it that low per box? Are you buying reclaimed shot and military powder..?

Wads: $9.99 per 500 = $.50 a box

Primers: $20 per 1000 = $.50 a box

Hulls: Free

Powder: $12 per pound when bought in bulk = $.76 a box

Shot: $.55 a pound for bulk, reclaimed, redropped, regraphited lead = $.751 a box

Total cost= $2.51 per box. If I have to buy hulls, that will take me to the $3.50 a box range

You buy it locally, online? I've seen powder is 8 lb kegs, but not a drum. 55 gal drum of shot must literally weigh a ton.

I contact the company I want to buy from and place a group buy order in bulk. I shoot skeet 3 times a week with about 20 different guys, all of whom reload and who have resources to do group buys

Very nice. I don't shoot that kind of volume to justify reloading 12g, but I'll put that info on the back burner... maybe one day.

I buy all of my reloading supplies in bulk as well. I am fortunate to get all of my components from Oregon. The shot is new and I buy 8# kegs of powder. I reload for between $3.00 to $3.50 for shells equal to a AA or STS.

My loads are 1 oz #7.5 or #8, Cheddite primers, Downrange wad, gun club or STS hull, and 18 grains of Hodgdon clays. I load on a MEC 9000 progressive and can get a flat done in a little over an hour. If you don't buy in bulk, it may not be worth it to reload.
