How Many Grains Per Pound ?

A little confused
Just opened a new can of IMR4064
When I say new, the can is 1976 but unopened.

I Loaded 40 rounds at 49.5gr., there is only 2755 grains left
I thought there was 7000 grains to a pound
This only comes to 4735

7000 is correct.

hylander 03-20-2013 6:52 PM

Well this is weird then.
I opened another can and it has the same amount in it

Scale is spot on.
I just weight the cans and they are not 1 lb. as the can says, they are closer to .75 lb.

troysland 03-20-2013 6:57 PM

Maybe the seal had a leak and some of it evaporated? J/k. Looks like you got shorted 2265 gr. That's just under 46 rounds worth.

Shrinkage!

Audredger 03-20-2013 7:42 PM

For the record; 480 grains to the once; 12 ounces to the pound NOTE: Troy ounce & pound

Powder however is sold by the Avoirdupois pound

takes us to the question: which weighs more an ounce of feathers or an ounce of gold? Answer: gold

Pound of feathers or a pound of gold? Answer: feathers

A Troy ounce weighs more than an Avoirdupois ounce but a Troy pound is 12 ounces and an Avoirdupois pound has 16 ounces

The three most valuable things are weighed in the Troy ounce.... Gun Powder, Drugs & Gold

I have opened a lot of those exact cans over the years (teal colored tall thin rectangle) and they all came with a full pound of IMR 4064 (i.e. 7000 grains). At one pound, the one pound cans are not full, but certainly not just 60% full, more like 90%.

You got shorted.

Twice? I suppose it's possible they had some issues at the factory...

Kappy 03-20-2013 9:39 PM

Maybe try calling and letting them know?

I have never seen it, but I am sure it can happen. I still have some of the old still sealed 4064 cans on the shelf (probably more from like the 80's than 70's), but they all weight about 1 lb 3.2 oz (the can weighs 3.2 ozs.)

From 1976?

Pacilander 03-21-2013 12:30 AM

Did you buy these from a retailer or private party?

Privite party

HKMadness 03-21-2013 7:42 AM

Well there you have it. Seller pinched your stashes. Who was it?

I will have to agree, my money is on the fact the seller took 1/4 pound from each and that's why you are coming up with the shortage.

That would work except a Troy pound would be 5760gr to the Avoirdupois pound's 7000gr. Which would still mean the container is 1000 grains short at 4735gr.

Sounds like the can was pinched

I really don't think so.
The cans still had the seal over the top and they were tight.

Pacilander 03-21-2013 10:07 AM

The seals are easy to remove and replace. I can't say for a fact your cans were shorted on purpose, but I have checked my cans in the past and a pound was always there. I would really be suspect of your seller.

Are we talking about the English pound or the Metric pound here?

Umm, no. Gun powder has always been weighed (at least in the 20th century) in avoirdupois weights. 16 ounces a pound, 16 drams an ounce and 437.5 grains an ounce, for 7000 grains

Gold is measure in Troy units (which would be 5760 grains, so he would still have been swindled). 12 ounces a pound, 20 pennyweights an ounce, 24 grains a pennyweight.

But drugs are measured in apothecary units (well metric now). One pound is 12 ounces, but 8 drams (or drachm) an ounce and 3 scruples a dram, a scruple is 20 grains. So 5760 grains, but a different system. (This is the US apothecary units, the UK changed from the wine gallon to the imperial gallon in 1824, screwing everything up...20 ounces a pint and such)

Only grains are a common measure

What on earth is a metric pound? I know that sometimes, informally, 500 grams is called a pound (despite the various pounds in various systems being more or less than that), but it isn't an actual unit. And it would still be different considerably than the amount the OP has, in fact 500 grams would be almost 7800 grains

What type of seal was in the can? I have a still sealed, new, unopened can of IMR 4064 bought in 1981. It has a metal seal inside the spout that you have to punch and pry out, pretty thick metal. I weighed the can and it weighs just over a pound.

I believe the cans from the 70's were sealed the same way. Newer tins just had the thin plastic disc as a seal.

You may have been pinched.

waho 03-21-2013 8:39 PM

hylander, how are you weighing these? Did you dump the powder out or are you weighing everything together?

What kind of seal?

ivanimal 03-21-2013 8:49 PM

Thats a first. I have had many overages especially in 8 and 12 lb lots. Never under.

Foam looking seal like on the new plastic jugs.

G-forceJunkie 03-21-2013 9:31 PM

Probably just the foam disc that was used as a seal under the metal cap stuck after all these years. I don't recall anything with the glued down/heat sealed plastic/foam seals that are common today in products back then. I wasn't untill that Tylenol poisoning scare of the early/mid 80's that everything started getting sealed up with tamper evident seals.

csburtch 03-21-2013 9:43 PM

Who said math and all that crap is never used in the real world... Lol

I have bottles that I didn't open for over a year. The "seal" inside the lid practically glued itself to the bottle again and it felt like popping a factory-fresh bottle all over.

You seem to have been robbed slightly.

I'd suggest double-checking your weighing methods, checking the accuracy of your scale, then checking if the containers you bought are actually labeled for one pound.

HKMadness 03-22-2013 7:58 AM

Every time I open an already used can with the foam seal, it's like it was never opened before. You wuz robbed.

latesvak 03-23-2013 12:39 PM

I guess it all depends on how many loads I've done. On a real note I think you was robbed. I would speak with the person or store you got it/them from . Come to think of it I have never done/thought of checking the weight of a new can of powder.

Well I am starting to think I got shorted and the cans were opened before.
I don't think the seller did this intentional. The cans are 37 years old, maybe he used some a Loooooooong time ago and forgot about it.
May weighing methods are correct and my scale spot on, I routinely check my scale with check weights. Cans are labeled 1 lb.

On a side note I shot some of my loaded rounds from my 03A3 and they shoot spot on just like I loaded with the new powder :)
