How Many Grains Per Pound ?
A little confused
Just opened a new can of IMR4064 When I say new, the can is 1976 but unopened. I Loaded 40 rounds at 49.5gr., there is only 2755 grains left I thought there was 7000 grains to a pound This only comes to 4735  |

I just weight the cans and they are not 1 lb. as the can says, they are closer to .75 lb. |
Maybe the seal had a leak and some of it evaporated? J/k. Looks like you got shorted 2265 gr. That's just under 46 rounds worth.

For the record; 480 grains to the once; 12 ounces to the pound NOTE: Troy ounce & pound
Powder however is sold by the Avoirdupois pound takes us to the question: which weighs more an ounce of feathers or an ounce of gold? Answer: gold Pound of feathers or a pound of gold? Answer: feathers A Troy ounce weighs more than an Avoirdupois ounce but a Troy pound is 12 ounces and an Avoirdupois pound has 16 ounces The three most valuable things are weighed in the Troy ounce.... Gun Powder, Drugs & Gold |

I have opened a lot of those exact cans over the years (teal colored tall thin rectangle) and they all came with a full pound of IMR 4064 (i.e. 7000 grains). At one pound, the one pound cans are not full, but certainly not just 60% full, more like 90%.
You got shorted. |

Maybe try calling and letting them know?

Did you buy these from a retailer or private party?

Well there you have it. Seller pinched your stashes. Who was it?

Sounds like the can was pinched |

The cans still had the seal over the top and they were tight. |
The seals are easy to remove and replace. I can't say for a fact your cans were shorted on purpose, but I have checked my cans in the past and a pound was always there. I would really be suspect of your seller.

Are we talking about the English pound or the Metric pound here?

Gold is measure in Troy units (which would be 5760 grains, so he would still have been swindled). 12 ounces a pound, 20 pennyweights an ounce, 24 grains a pennyweight. But drugs are measured in apothecary units (well metric now). One pound is 12 ounces, but 8 drams (or drachm) an ounce and 3 scruples a dram, a scruple is 20 grains. So 5760 grains, but a different system. (This is the US apothecary units, the UK changed from the wine gallon to the imperial gallon in 1824, screwing everything up...20 ounces a pint and such) Only grains are a common measure |

I believe the cans from the 70's were sealed the same way. Newer tins just had the thin plastic disc as a seal. You may have been pinched. |
hylander, how are you weighing these? Did you dump the powder out or are you weighing everything together?

Thats a first. I have had many overages especially in 8 and 12 lb lots. Never under.

Probably just the foam disc that was used as a seal under the metal cap stuck after all these years. I don't recall anything with the glued down/heat sealed plastic/foam seals that are common today in products back then. I wasn't untill that Tylenol poisoning scare of the early/mid 80's that everything started getting sealed up with tamper evident seals.

Who said math and all that crap is never used in the real world... Lol

You seem to have been robbed slightly. I'd suggest double-checking your weighing methods, checking the accuracy of your scale, then checking if the containers you bought are actually labeled for one pound. |
Every time I open an already used can with the foam seal, it's like it was never opened before. You wuz robbed.
|
I guess it all depends on how many loads I've done. On a real note I think you was robbed. I would speak with the person or store you got it/them from . Come to think of it I have never done/thought of checking the weight of a new can of powder.

I don't think the seller did this intentional. The cans are 37 years old, maybe he used some a Loooooooong time ago and forgot about it. May weighing methods are correct and my scale spot on, I routinely check my scale with check weights. Cans are labeled 1 lb. On a side note I shot some of my loaded rounds from my 03A3 and they shoot spot on just like I loaded with the new powder :) 100yds.
