Some IDPA questions??

Read this post by Roundeye and did not want to jump-in;
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=694722

Went to the Richmond site and looked at some IDPA information;

the OWB holster has to be tight to the body and the center of the firearm should line-up with the belt. No gaps between the firearm and/or holster is allowed. I, being a novice/newbie, bought an expensive Nighthawk pancake holster from a Calgunner. The holster is not concealable for me, the butt/heel of the 1911 is noticeable. A light weight shirt or jacket will not conceal it.

Next question; I believe it would be a pain in the *** if I had to slip a tight fitting holster on a quality belt and feed the belt through the loops of my jeans. Can a person (non-competitor) use those 3/8-1/2" leather snap straps to hold a holster and belt rig to your pants belt?

Many Thanks

Read the rule book first. http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf

Concealable doesn't matter in IDPA. Just have to follow the rules.

The belt has to pass through the belt loops.

I use those leather straps with the snaps and they work great.

Here is my holster.

"The belt has to pass through the belt loops."

Scotty, thats the question. Why?

And I was reading from the Richmond site; page 8

http://www.richmondhotshots.com/docs...ter%20Info.pdf

So if I understand you, I can have snaps on my jeans and close the snaps around the belt holster rig.

Just show up and use what you have. No one will call you out on the technicalities of the holster rules at a local club match if it is your first match. I would spend more time learning about the shooting related rules rather than trying to learn the technical rules on guns/holsters at this point.

Whatever holster you run, the belt has to go thru the loop(s). However, it does not necessarily have to pass thru the belt loops on your pants. The type of holster you have is going to be like that. When I was shooting IDPA, I always ran an IWB and it had snap loops. IDPA stages, unless otherwise specificied are, shot from concelament but that has nothing to do with printing. Don't get hung up on the rules, you are new. Just tell the match director you are new, they will hook up you with experienced shooters. Be safe, make good hits, don't point your gun at me.

Thanks icedevil and HighLander51,

Good advice, I plan on enjoying this sport. If I where younger I probably would compete.

Went to the Chabot gun range site and noticed a new Holster class. Does anyone know anything about it. Has anyone taken the Law enforcement drawing class?

NewGuy1911 02-04-2013 3:19 PM

Maybe the requirment of "through the loops" is to exclude the Cowboy type holster.

I am 61 years old and compete. Many shooters are 70 plus and kick ***.

Maybe the requirment of "through the loops" is to exclude the Cowboy type holster. Cowboys, SASS, have their own rules, just as ICORE, Steel Challenge and USPSA.

No, the holster rule is just a rule. IDPA was invented by Bill Wilson, one of the greatest IPSC shooters ever.

Hi HighLander51,

About a month ago a younger guy called me an "old Man", good thing I was not in a bad mood.

Thanks for your response it has inspired me, Wish I had jumped in years ago.

Many Thanks

Scotty, thats the question. Why?

Because the rules say so.

Page 36.
D. Belts.
Gun belts may be no wider than 1 ¾” or thicker than 5/16” and
must pass through the pant loops.

The only exception is if you are LE or Mil, then you can use your duty gear, but all retention devices and equipment must be present.

The rule is intended to use what would be conceal carry gear, not tactical or competition gear.

Local matches that are properly run will make you correct your gear. Just because it is your first time doesn't mean you don't need to follow the rules.

Bob Hostetter 02-05-2013 6:53 AM

Sanctioned matches are, and should be, run in complete compliance with the rules. Local matches are for the most part simply a form of entertainment and the rules are often relaxed especially for new shooters to encrouage them to become active in the sport long term. In spite of the observations of some, IDPA is not and never will be a religious experience requiring absolute obedience to a set of rituals or preordained dogma.

Thanks Guys,

Its' been awhile since I've read the IDPA rules and I understand where you're coming from. Being lazy, did not want to thread the stiff gun belt through the magazine holders, stiff holster, and jean belt loops.

Have been to a couple action-type meets. I understand a need, for me, to wear suspenders. I wear suspender when working; will IDPA rules allow me to wear them?

Any suspender recommendations?

HighLander51 02-05-2013 8:00 AM

Actually the belt rule is to exclude inner/outer rigs commonly used in USPSA, called speed belts.

Don't let your age keep you from enjoying the sport. I'm 64 and I compete in IDPA, USPSA and 3Gun. I went to Iron Man last year and I'm going to Superstition Mystery Mountain and the 3G nationals this year.

Stick with the 1911; don't let the young guys like Highlander talk you into a Glock.

That's right, I only ran 1911's from 1968 to 1992. But then I starting running Glocks that don't have all those extra buttons. So much easier at my age.....

Thanks Guys,

I sure picked a lousy time to start this.

Do some ranges allow 1911-22 conversion units for training and/or meets?

Which 22lr conversion units are preferred/more trouble free?

Been reading that trainers are starting to suggest using the 22lr, stating training with it is better than no training at all.

.22LR is not allowed in USPSA or IDPA. Some local action matches allow it. .22LR is however a division in Steel Challenge. There are conversions, but your best bet is to buy a Ruger 22/45 5.5" They are cheap, reliable and pretty much run forever and have the same controls as a 1911. Get the Majestic 2 piece take down pin if you ever decide to take it apart.

Concealable doesn't matter in IDPA. Just have to follow the rules.

Two of my holsters are shown; the Nighthawk Custom (looks allot like a Wilson Combat) and my new to me Bianchi #4L "Askins Avenger. I been wanting the lather for years, not to happy with the other (not concealable
