North Los Angeles IDPA Style Tactical Clinic

We've gotten good feedback as far as interest in doing an IDPA style clinic at ISI. Now comes the curriculum question. What would you like the clinic to cover? Intro to IDPA? or more of a skim over the basics and focus more on moving engagements, use of cover, strong and weak hand shooting, etc.?

Yugo 02-12-2013 9:13 PM

INTERESTED I want to get into IDPA!

blockfort 02-12-2013 9:27 PM

I'd like to have stages set up, and for us to run them, on the clock and scored, but to have you or another instructor watch us and the critique immediately after. That immediate feedback is important, as is shooting real stages on the clock. Someone shooting video, even if on a phone, would also be useful.

Nathan Rollins 02-12-2013 9:38 PM

set up two maybe three stages that differ greatly on how you engage, movement and use of cover, tactical reload with retention vs slide lock reloads, we could have fun with that. Run them repeatedly until we've corrected some of the wasted movement and general errors before moving on. Critiquing and fixing errors is the easy part.

blockfort 02-12-2013 9:42 PM

sure, 3 stages with critique and ability to run them several times. We'll get better anyway by having just run the stage, but eventually we will hit our own personal limit, a best score that will be hard to beat, and then the work begins, and subtle changes become more important. This is josh, btw. We missed you at 1800. I did well. I beat Corey S and Dan G, though they were both CDP and I had my XD9. But still.

Nathan Rollins 02-12-2013 10:25 PM

I did see this! Jerrold and Dennis were on fire too! Had to help Kim's brother move, would've loved to have been able to win there, I mean be there. LOL

If you make the 3 stages very different challenging different aspects of your skill and run them to perfection, that would be fun as well as humbling.
IDPA Compact for Jan, I ran stage 4 in 14.61 gross 15.11 net, I think the closest Master was a half second behind me. Simply enough I ran so many shooters through it that I had it as second nature. If had been able to shoot it a couple of times, I think I could have gone a bit faster.

What you guys are describing is coaching, not a shooting class. Not many people provide this type of service.

penguin0123 02-13-2013 6:49 PM

I'm interested. PM me with details on how to sign up.

I've been shooting IDPA casually (read horrible times on par with grandpa and his flintlock), so I'm personally looking for advice on target transition, how to read the stage and decide the shooting sequence, how to do reloads (both tactical and from slide lock). Basically, I'm looking for training to improve my times that is still applicable to real life.

Moto 02-13-2013 6:52 PM

I'm interested.

mabilis_matulis 02-13-2013 10:11 PM

+1 I'm interested... I hope u have Sundays..

gesundheit 02-13-2013 11:24 PM

Nathan if you can do class in April that'd be awesome

RoundEye 02-15-2013 4:11 PM

I would be interested in a coaching type of clinic like blockfort has suggested.

Nathan Rollins 02-17-2013 8:50 PM

Sunday March 10th is looking like an availability for an IDPA training day, going over basic rules and procedures then moving on to individual needs.

Your welcome to PM me and we'll go over details.

blockfort 02-17-2013 9:18 PM

l'll spread the word.

scotty99 02-20-2013 9:15 PM

I have perhaps five people that would come to an intro class. I think the biggest concerns for newbies are learning the rules and commands, drawing from a holster and shooting on the move.

See you Saturday.

RoundEye 02-20-2013 9:19 PM

Time, and cost?

Nathan Rollins 02-22-2013 1:08 PM

9AM at ISI Sunday March 10, cost is $70 for ISI members and $75 for non members. Please contact me if you intend to attend.

Nathan Rollins 03-05-2013 6:41 AM

Sunday march 10th is the day, I need a head count on who's coming. Remember to set your clocks forward Saturday Night March 9th. Ammunition requirement is 150 rounds, we are starting at 9am, we'll spend a little time on going over basics and then jump in on problem solving for each individual shooter.

Ricky-Ray 03-07-2013 9:38 PM

Grrrr.... I just saw this and very interested but I'm already commited to working a booth at the Fred Hall Show Sunday.

If there's another one I'd be interested.

Nathan Rollins 03-08-2013 6:13 AM

If there is enough interest we can do it once a month or every other month.

blockfort 03-08-2013 6:46 AM

Hmmm. Same day as 1800 idpa. What to do, what to do.

HighLander51 03-08-2013 9:50 AM

What's your background and experience with IDPA?

Nathan Rollins 03-10-2013 5:48 PM

Highlander, this is my 13th year of IDPA, USPSA/IPSC & Steel Challenge. I Compete, R.O. and teach. Most people on here know me from ISI, that's our home range.

Nathan Rollins 03-10-2013 6:32 PM

I'd like to thank everyone for coming out and participating today. I had a great time and hope everyone else did as well.

Nathan,
Sorry you beat me to this.
Thanks to you, Jeff and crew for hosting this event.
I got the feeling everyone enjoyed the day, and all at the least took something away from the day to improve their accuracy, overall time or enjoyment of competing in IDPA matches.
Now, go put some Noxzema on your face and neck......after two straight days in the sun, you got yourself a little sunburned :p

Haven't been to ISI since 2005, do you ever shoot Norco Running Gun?

Nathan Rollins 03-10-2013 8:18 PM

I haven't shot Norco, I'll shoot Lopez Canyon, a little Prado and Desert Sportsman (Vegas) when I have the time. I'm 3 Saturdays s month at ISI, 2nd Sunday normally at 1800 Adventure Club and teaching 2-3 Sundays a month.

PM720 03-10-2013 9:43 PM

Well, speaking for myself I had a great time and found this to be very productive for me at my level. I think the main thing I took away from this was to change the way I approach a given stage mentally. Doing a better job of mentally "walking" through the stage, etc. Thanks again to Nathan and crew for providing a fun, informative day! :)

scotty99 03-12-2013 2:02 PM

Great event, I know my whole crew loved it and got a lot out of it. Already know for sure there will be two fresh faces at the next match. One of my guys is so stoked, he paid WAY too much for a Glock 34 on Gunbroker last night so he will be ready.

Thank you Nathan and crew for a great day. I know I'm going to see a big improvement in my shooting at the next match. And, I have four people already waiting for the next clinic.

Nathan Rollins 03-12-2013 3:05 PM

Thanks Guys! It was a lot of fun, I'm thinking end of April for the next one.

EBR Works 03-12-2013 9:38 PM

This was a terrific experience. Thanks so much for organizing it. I plan on being at the match next month. It would be great if there was another training session soon as my wife is interested in participating. I'm interested in joining ISI as well.

Well, if you ever make it down to Norco Running Gun, you are welcome to join our squad. Show us some of that ISI magic. Does Dalton ever shoot anymore?

Nathan Rollins 03-13-2013 4:23 PM

Dalton shoots steel challenge and was prepping for The Bianchi Cup a few months back.

Nathan Rollins 03-24-2013 3:02 PM

Next IDPA Clinic is Sunday April 28th at ISI 8:00am.

CSACANNONEER 03-24-2013 3:17 PM

Interested in the next one. Where is ISI?

Nathan Rollins 05-02-2013 12:09 PM
