Update:
Our plan was to get to our area, set up camp, and hike in for an afternoon hunt, hike back to camp, and make an early morning push.
What actually happened:
We got to the area we planned on camping in around 11 am and set up camp. On our way up we saw more hunting traffic than we had experienced in the past with 4 separate groups of hunters but they were all targeting deer. We hiked to the trail head and dropped into the valley, we made quick work of the 3 mile hike in and in our search we found a decent water source in the dry valley. Looking around there were quite a few game trails into the water so we built a blind and posted up. Nothing and nothing with only small birds chirping a storm. We tried a few calls but no response. We hiked out in the dark and the return hike made us realize we were not in shape. It took us longer to get and by the time we got to camp it was late and we still had to eat dinner. We headed to sleep, unfortunately we were sore and exhausted and slept through the alarms. Both of us were bummed about missing our morning opportunity. Best part was the four gun shots we heard as we tore camp down.
We know the turkey are down there, just need to figure out the right tactic. Both of us are novice hunters at best but it seems like there is progress in each trip. There is an off chance we get one more fall trip but we will keep at it, to much fun trying to get those birds.
