Army Assault pack vs Large Molle
I'm trying to decide if I should get a Army assault pack " 3 day" 2000cm or get a Large Rucksack 5000cm monster one?
My requirements: 1) Must have enough space for at least two sets of changes of clothes 2) Sleep system ( Large rucksack has a internal pocket for this) 3) Able to store at least 3 days worth of food, toiletries etc. 4) Medic bag, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, CAT tourniquet, etc. 5) Flash lights, electronics etc. 6) Hydration ( the small assault pack has a insert for a camelpak) I feel that I can fit everything into a Army "3 day "assault pack. I'm a noob when it comes to packs, rucksacks. (Rucksack) http://www.armysurplusworld.com/prod...roductID=43244 vs http://www.fortbraggsurplus.us/M-O-L...sault-pack.htm |
If you are planning to walk on roads get something with wheels. If you are in the hills molle pack.
|
I need for a " go bag" first responder. Has to be ACU, since I'm a reservist.
|
seems to me that you can buy 2 of the Assault packs ( second link) for the price of the Molle Ruck. For me it is a matter of prioritizing money spent.
I could easily make both packs work but if I can get by spending 1/2 that leaves me money for something else. |
Ironically, i found the bigger one cheaper. Feel thats its too much?

Those plastic frames break

Molle Rucksack ACU Digital Like New
This is a cheaper price and should fill the bill. |
Yeah the large rucksack is the way to go. They have a medium one it's harder to find (supply).
|
Good ol fashion Alice pack works well also. Aluminum frame takes quite a bit of abuse.
|
I score big time! I bought a large rucksack ACU MOLLE for 35$ from a guy who EAS from the Marines.
Checked everything out. GTG |
Nice! Congrats!
I have a ruck and assault pack. The assault pack will hold a sandwich and a bottle of water and that's about it. |
I'm not sure I could ever bring myself to buy "tactical" gear that isn't either Coyote, black or "Marine Green" (not MARPAT). Maybe it's just me. Congrats on your find though!

I'm glad it worked out for you but found some of your comments interesting.
Not sure how you can be a reservist and yet a noob to packs? Quote:

It belonged to his ex wife. She was a Army reservist, it sat around in his place. He wanted it gone.

This is my large BOB.. Its not Tacticool but should get the job done.

I like that pack Deme......price looks good too.
This is what I use... http://www.armygear.net/armygear/ima.../USMC_ILBE.jpg I wanted a pack that was less tacticool but the price was right @ $60 |

I have a plain molle bag in the truck at all times. Packed just inside the garage door is a Zuma rolling bag. It's benefit is that the top is also strong enough to sit on. I also have plastic storage boxes for food etc at home.

You already answered your own post. Not sure how you havent had personal experiance to see that the assault pack was too small for your use.
|
Nothing like the old milspec stuff...
|
+1 for the ILBEain pack. I picked upon e for $75.
|
My thinking on the matter:
A three day pack should only need one change of clothes. If you're planning on an initial change from ( for example ) business attire to a set of rugged bugging out-wear, keep that initial change outside the BOB itself so you don't have to dig deeply for it. First aid kit for a BOB should be basic and minimal to meet dire medical emergencies, not cover every circumstance. A large ruck is more of an INCH bag rather than BOB |
ALICE w/frame? THEY are pretty cheap.
|
While we are on the topic...Anyone try walking a distance over 2 miles with their fully loaded BOB?
I am thinking about taking mine out to mission peak. (Near Milpitas) Yeah I know it may not be a real world scenario walk, but I can at least check comfort issues. |
Those military dudes have to carry twice the weight I want to carry in their packs. Plus, their packs themselves weigh a ton. I prefer to go the backpacker route instead of the milsurp route.
My pack is big enough for sleep system, shelter, a couple of changes of clothes, 3 days food, FAK, cook system, hydration, etc. REI has a pretty good page of what to consider when selecting a pack: http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpack.html |
Get a high quality non mil backpack (I'd recommend Osprey). 1st they are designed to carry large amounts of weight disrupting on your shoulders and hips. Also most good backpacks (like Osprey) have sizing options to tailor fit to your torso. Finally mil style packs shout "Look at me - I've got everything you need".
Go grey my friend. |
Its all in the deal.//
What do you need. How much do you want to pay. There is much good equipment out there. |
I've got an Alps Mountaineering 80+15 Pack ($50 local), a Large ALICE Pack w/ Frame ($75 shipped), and just picked up a new- never issued MARPAT ILBE rig w/ the matching Assault Pack & a used (but looks never issued) hydration system ($140 shipped).
The Alps Mountaineering pack is a little small for my frame... fits my wife well though. The Alice Pack is actually quite comfortable. It came w/ new shoulder straps & pads. The frame is in incredible shape, looks brand new. I've loaded it up with about 75lbs of stuff and took it for a short hike. It was pretty comfortable. I'm going to try to figure out a way to upgrade the padding. I just don't think it will hold up for very long. I haven't had a chance to do much with the ILBE setup. But on first inspection... it's AWESOME! LOL! I understand MARPAT & MOLLE aren't very inconspicuous, but man that is a well built & designed pack! Can't wait to try it out. I like that pack Deme posted the link to. I'm trying to figure out how to mount a rifle to the ILBE and ALICE Pack. |

If you liked the ILBE, then you'll looooove the FILBE! lol not the price though. I like the ilbe but hated the marpat. The new filbe's come in plain dark earth. |
I love the FILBE aka USMC pack.
|
I just tried out my ILBE pack and was very impressed. I carried about 35 pounds total for an overnighter - 7 miles round trip. It carried very well. It is far better than my medium ALICE pack that I used to use. My only complaint is that it could use a more small compartments.
This trip I was carrying more gear for my two kids and wife who were with me. If going solo I could bring less gear and have space to spare for bringing deer meat out in one trip. |

If your just doing a 3day (72hr) bag, just use the assault pack. If the S has REALLY hit the fan, then combine all as an INCH bag. |
