What do you guys use for protection when camping

4 Attachment(s)
I just got back from camping, Took the picture of my protection against the wild in the off chance I needed it.

Know and behold, a mountain lion came to our camp sight, i didn't even notice how close it got until the next morning. Saw paw prints, and the lion stole another campers bag of food. There was only two of us camping, this was not an official campsite, no bathrooms, no showers, no light, no tables. Basically real camping.

I herd foot steps, sounded like a mid-sized mountain lion, so I kepted the fire burning through the night. Also have seen bears, usually they don't bother campers while the camp fire is burning. The camper next to us had a glock 23.

I had a remington 870 wingmaster, with pistol grip and barrel cut to exact minimum legal length. Overall length and barrel length are all legal. And i had a taurus 605 357magnum. The shotgun stayed locked in the car except for at night when we were sleeping in the tent. The revolver which is my trunk gun was on me. All guns were in locked containers when we were traveling and or in areas of population.

My protection while I was camping, What do you guys take with you?

I'm married, I don't use protection.

props to you for keeping it real dude...nowadays when people post up their camping pics there is usually a big motorhome/RV in the pic...

Hvac_dude 02-19-2013 12:25 PM

I carry my .40 with me while camping. I also keep my 870 in the tent right next to the AR.

NytWolf 02-19-2013 12:28 PM

During the hunting season, my elders keep their rifles to their side when sleeping. That habit was probably from their military days. I just keep whichever sidearm I have with me during that expedition.

Just one more note -- it looks like you are Asian. Depending on your nationality and beliefs, your camping spot isn't very ideal.

sfbay 02-19-2013 12:29 PM

I usually use Bug Off and sunscreen. Never had a problem.

Why would my nationality make this spot not ideal? I was born and raise in America, went camping since i was very young, Also father is a military man as well raise under his roof, with his teachings. Now in my early 30s married and still enjoying the outdoors.

Bug off and sun screen is a must, but it won't stop a bear/mountain lion from wanting to eat you.

Tanner68 02-19-2013 12:37 PM

Not particular about my gun during camping. Depends if I am deer hunting, bird hunting, or just tramping about. I guess I always feel better with a semi auto rifle, but I often make do with just a sidearm. In addition to a gun, DOGS are what will give your camp real security.

Never mind. It's a thing for some SE Asians.

MotoriousRacing 02-19-2013 12:45 PM

That wire mesh stuff looks wicked. Anyone know if it'll be banned?

fusionstar 02-19-2013 12:54 PM

M&P40 usually. I might throw in some slugs in the 870 at night time.

But everyone responsible person is usually carrying at our campsite since everyone goes off to do their own thing during the day.

Alcohol and guns do not mix. This is just for a photo op.

Forget "protection". This state is so insane they'd probably charge you with a crime if you gave the lion indigestion from eating you.

nastyhabts26 02-19-2013 12:56 PM

Im sorry I camp in a Toyhauler.
I have 4 walls and an Italian Mastiff for protection.
Also a 12 gauge and a 1911, and a couple of other assorted rifles, pistols, and shot guns.
I also have an ill tempered red headed wife, she is more dangerous than the mastiff.

SNCaliber 02-19-2013 12:58 PM

i do a lot of offroading/camping, i got a glock 40 for this purpose

Now I'm wondering too...the original comment makes it sound like racism is going on somewhere. :p

(I love playing the race card. :hide:)

Don't be hating because your jealous. :p

I backpack every 6 months or so. I sleep with a Glock 29 10mm in the corner of the tent near my head, always in the same place so I can grab it without looking. I also keep it available while I'm out and about on the trip. 200gr hardcast Double Tap

Oceanbob 02-19-2013 1:37 PM

A Glock 20SF in 10MM is my trunk gun and I own several preban 15 round mags. That's all. In the past with the kids (up at Peppermint Creek) when we camped in a regular space, I took a 1911 and a Mini-14.

But that was not bare-bones camping like you're doing..wow..that looks like a great place (except for the rocks..LOL)...

So my choice is a GLOCK.

Have fun and enjoy..!

:D

Yeah, it looks like the best and only flat spot big enough for the tent. The rest of the area looks like hillside and rocks..?

I carried my .44 last time I went backpacking.

Unless you're superstitious and believe what the elders say, you wouldn't understand. :D

Hah...I don't get it exactly, but I think I have the general idea now. :D

(Just what IS the superstition though? Maybe something along the lines of, "Confucius say, camping under big rock brings kidney stones.")

tcrpe 02-19-2013 1:46 PM

Upper Kern?

BTW, it's two-leggers that you need protection from, not cougars or bears.

Hey...welcome to Cal Guns.!

My daughter loves her Glock 19 in 9MM. She's now 15.

Scary and risky.

LOL... no, nothing like that. :oji: Has to do with the mountain lion -- what it does.

Nor Cal Scot 02-19-2013 2:07 PM

I backpack about 30 to 40 days a year. Two legged critters scare me the most. I always carry my G19 just in case. A shotgun is too much extra weight.

Sequoia National Forest, firearms legal and welcome.
(upper kern)

No legal issues, plus rangers are usually gun friendly.
On top of that if it's in your tent, you should be fine.

I agree two leggers are also a reason why you should have
protection.

Tank 57 02-19-2013 2:50 PM

If my vehicle is close,usually a rifle in .308.If backpacking,S&W 629.

toby 02-19-2013 3:24 PM

Been camping,Hiking,Hunting since 1967 and the only thing I take or need or want is a hand gun, and stay's in my truck or my tent at night.

geeknow 02-19-2013 3:28 PM

Protection...? SPF50 or better, and bug spray. Lots of bug spray. I've seen bears, mountain lions, and coyotes out there. Those dont bother me nearly as much as the freaken mosquitos.

If I were in grizzly country, I'd pack something more than bug spray.

comblock 02-19-2013 4:15 PM

No bears, ill pack a .45. Bears, ill pack a 44 magnum. Im more worried of the crazy 2legged creature than the ones walking on all four

appagohm 02-19-2013 4:30 PM

Just an update, during the second day of our three day camp, someone came to the area we were at and set off some explosives, right after the boom i herd a girl scream, a few seconds later a guy yelling "calm the f*** down"

By the time i felt it was safe enough to go take a look, i saw a burt shirt, and two half melted slippers. My wife was more curious then i was after the explosion.

RandyD 02-19-2013 4:31 PM

I have noticed the lions, tigers and bears tend to hide their food from me (I am 6'3" and 250lbs) when I am camping, so I generally don't take anything for protection.
